Some weeks are hard to describe until you’ve experienced them.

The sound of hand tools early in the morning. Fresh shavings covering the bench. Dust settling into your apron by the end of the day. Conversations that carry on long after the workshop finishes.

LIWF is more than a course or a marketplace. It’s a chance to spend a full week immersed in making alongside people who care deeply about craft, skill, and traditional woodworking.

Before a saw cuts or a chisel pares, the work begins with a line.

The marking gauge is one of the traditional tools used to create clean, consistent layouts for accurate joinery. A small tool with a huge role in fine woodworking.

Across LIWF 2026, you’ll spot marking gauges in use throughout hand tool demonstrations, cabinetmaking courses, Japanese joinery workshops, and traditional woodworking classes.

Because good craftsmanship starts long before the first cut is made.

Your camera roll will be full by the end of the weekend.

From rare hand tools and historic collections to clever workshop setups and finishing techniques, LIWF is full of details worth stopping for.

The Marketplace brings together makers, collectors, tool specialists, restorers, and craftspeople from across the woodworking world, creating the kind of event where inspiration is everywhere you look.

Some visitors leave with tools. Others leave with ideas for their next project. Most leave with both.

This year, our first cohort of learners from the East London Furniture Institute (ELFI) graduated.

Now, our Year 1 learners are preparing to begin their first industry placements with workshops, studios, and makers across the sector.

From joinery and machine skills to finishing, upholstery, restoration, and design, ELFI learners are gaining real experience alongside professionals who believe in passing skills on to the next generation.

That spirit sits at the heart of LIWF.
Not just celebrating craftsmanship, but helping create future makers.

Every ticket, every course, and every conversation helps support woodworking education and opportunities for young people entering the industry.

This year, LIWF is partnering with The Good Hotel, giving festival visitors a unique place to stay just minutes from the action.

Moored in the Royal Docks, The Good Hotel combines waterfront views, modern design, and a strong social mission, making it the perfect base for a week of woodworking, making, and discovering new skills.

Spend the day learning from expert makers, exploring the Marketplace, and trying hands-on workshops, then unwind overlooking the Thames with fellow festival attendees.

LIWF visitors will also have access to an exclusive discounted room rate during the festival week.

“Passing on skills. Sharing knowledge. Building the future of the craft, one young maker at a time.”

That’s exactly what Studio 1718 experienced when they welcomed LDE UTC learner Joe into their workshop for industry placement.

One of the things that makes LIWF different is that every ticket helps support future makers through opportunities, education and real workshop experience.

From discovering woodworking for the first time to gaining confidence in a professional studio, the festival is about keeping craft skills alive and creating pathways into the industry.

When you support LIWF, you’re supporting the next generation of makers too.

Meet the Maker: Rachael South

We’re proud to welcome third-generation chair caner and upholsterer Rachael South to LIWF 2026.

Based in East London, Rachael combines traditional upholstery and woven seating techniques with a contemporary approach to furniture restoration and design. Alongside running her workshop practice and teaching, she was also one of the restoration experts featured on the BBC series The Repair Shop.

Rachael’s work helps preserve specialist heritage crafts including chair caning, rush seating and traditional upholstery techniques, passing skills from one generation to the next.

At LIWF 2026, Rachael will lead:
• Rush Stool Making (course)
• Leather Phone Case Making (masterclass)
• A seminar exploring her heritage as a third-generation chair caner

Rachael South will also be joining the LIWF Marketplace on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October.

“I didn’t realise there were so many different skills and courses to try.”

Trisha stopped by the Windsor Workshops stand at the LIWF Marketplace, where she spoke with James about the different styles of chair and how she could continue developing the skills she’d explored during the festival taster sessions.

That spirit of curiosity and shared knowledge is a huge part of LIWF. Across the Marketplace, visitors can meet specialist makers, discover new crafts and speak directly with the people teaching, restoring and making by hand every day.

Sashimono
/sɑːʃiːˈmoʊnoʊ/
[noun]

The traditional Japanese craft of making furniture and objects using precise wooden joinery instead of nails or screws.

Japanese woodworking places great emphasis on accuracy, patience and an understanding of wood movement, with joints carefully designed to fit together cleanly and securely by hand.

At LIWF 2026, Berlin-based furniture maker Dorian Bracht will explore these traditional techniques through both a masterclass and four-day Japanese Joinery course.
