Heritage Open Days England’s largest festival of history and culture | 11-20 September 2026 | What will you discover? | 🗝️🏰

In 1991 the Council of Europe and the European Commission set up European Heritage Days to raise appreciation for Europe’s rich and diverse cultural assets and their need for care and protection. The central principle was as simple as it was compelling: to throw open the doors to historic monuments and buildings, in particular those normally closed to the public. Established in 1994, Heritage Open

Days is England's contribution to this larger event. Expanding and diversifying from 701 events at its launch to over 5,000 today! Heritage Open Days continues to flourish with more events every year, reflecting the rich and diverse cultural heritage of England and its communities.

Where do those graceful hotel flowers come from, and who picks them?

Meet the 17th century gardeners and more recent lily-pickers of Middleton Hall.

Volunteer, Debbie Jordan, has been researching the estate’s women workers across its centuries of history. She shares some of her discoveries here, but watch out for their event this September where more stories of Everyday Histories will be explored!

Calling all Heritage Open Days organisers 📣

The call for Stories 2026 is here and it’s a great way to share your story about the work you've been doing in your community!

Last year, Love Oswestry were selected as one of the EHD stories. In recent years other event organisers have had similar success, including Oxford Open Doors & The Mills Archive Trust.

Apply now to share your story, selected stories may also be invited to apply for a grant of up to €10,000.
