Umut Adan and Zebânis released their new album Başka Bahar on 6th of March. The band has quickly emerged as one of the most compelling voices in the contemporary wave of Anatolian psychedelia. Drawing on the deep roots of Turkish folk while weaving in psychedelic textures and increasingly evident art-rock arrangements as he describes, Adan continues to push the genre into new directions.
Adan’s previous work had already begun attracting international attention. His debut album Bahar received a four-star review from western music media and was named among the most notable releases of its genre, introducing his distinctive songwriting and vision to a wider audience.
Speaking in Kadıköy, the Istanbul neighbourhood where he was born and raised, shortly before the album’s release, Adan reflected on the elements that shaped his music, the evolution of his music with Zebânis, and the creative ideas driving Başka Bahar.

Why do we still call it "world music"?

GEVENDE makes psychedelic rock. They happen to be from Turkey.

But the moment we label them "world music," something changes. Suddenly, they're not competing with Tame Impala or Arctic Monkeys in record stores.

They're in a separate section entirely.

Here's what we've learned organising events in London: audiences discover the best music when we stop categorising by geography and start categorising by actual sound.

GEVENDE's "Psychedelic Anatolia" isn't world music trying to educate you about Turkish culture.

It's psychedelic rock that draws from Anatolian traditions. Just like how Led Zeppelin drew from blues, or how Radiohead incorporates electronic elements.

October 8th at Earth, we're presenting them exactly as they are: a psychedelic rock band worth your attention.

Not because they're Turkish. Because they're brilliant.

The "world music" label often becomes a ceiling, not a platform. What if we dropped geographic categories and just talked about the actual music?

Would more incredible artists reach the audiences they deserve?

🎬✨ Three Visions, One Legacy
📽️ A journey through the lens of Turkish cinema’s past, present, and ever-evolving soul.

From the pioneering stages of Muhsin Ertuğrul, to the revolutionary grit of Yılmaz Güney, and the poetic stillness of Nuri Bilge Ceylan—this essay explores not just films, but the spirits who shaped them.

They didn’t merely direct movies.
They directed history, resistance, and reflection.
They whispered, roared, and listened.
