Mary Frith, also known as Moll Cutpurse, is an early example of a celebrity villain.

Intriguingly, it wasn’t her crimes alone that scandalised London, but her form of dress and habits – namely, that she dressed as a man.

Browse and discover a wide-range of collections that you can use to research the history of architecture in the capital!

These include the London County Council Building Act case files, which contain plans for thousands of London’s buildings and are our most heavily used records.

Discover records of district surveyors; material relating to town planning and slum clearance; and buildings built by London’s local government.

You'll also see Diocesan records relating to London’s churches, and can explore a variety of prints and photographs!

York House is a stately home in Twickenham, which dates from the 1630s. It’s a listed building with gardens and a fountain, and is the municipal offices for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, whose council meetings are held here. Our image is from c1800 when it was owned by Lieutenant Colonel James Webber.

This pretty little courtyard is Golden Yard in Hampstead. Its flagstone paving, listed buildings and street lamp, are still easily recognisable from this 1975 photograph!

Today is World Photography Day, so we're looking through the London Picture Archive to share some early examples of photography in London.

📸 Slide 1 shows a photographer on Clapham Common in 1877.

📸 Slide 2 was taken during a photography class at Bloomsbury Trade School in 1911.

📸 Slide 3 shows a photography classroom at the South East London Technical Institute in 1924.

From our collection here’s Walthamstow Central Library in 1984. The front is on the High Street which is also home to the longest street market in Europe! Not much has changed in these recent photos, except for the removal of a brick wall by the ‘stripey’ rear of the building.
