The inaugural Cruel & Unusual was one for the books. Thank you to everyone who came to bear witness.

This wouldn’t have been able to happen without ’s patience (and damn near enabling) when it came to facilitating the crazy ideas I was throwing his way and then stage managing to execute what we’d created. Initially we agreed on a 7 band bill. It ended up being 10 and then a secret set that finished at almost 1am. Hehe.

Nor would it without the trust of each and every band involved who took a chance on a new fest’s first edition as a place to present their art. Particular thanks and recognition to for agreeing to headline when this idea was still in its most nascent stage, allowing us to host their long, long overdue return.

But really… Every. Single. Fu***ng. Band. Holy s**t. The energy coming from all of you was that you were feeding off of each other’s sets (and a crowd that were ON from minute one), bringing it harder and harder cause everything else either already had or was going to crush and you didn’t dare to be the ones not to. I loved that so much.

And if you played or attended, I’m sure you’ll agree that you all owe a beer (make it a tequila and preferably not all at once) for the herculean shift she put in behind the mixing desk both in terms of endurance to do the whole day solo, and in terms of sonics, which were honestly perfect. That sounded like an ongoing apocalypse from the first note to the last. Immense work.

The main bit of feedback I got from everyone on this evil little gathering of ours was that it has to happen again.

I agree. Dates and info to be announced in due course. 👹👹👹

Til then, go see bands play shows. We are in a golden age of unholy noise of all kinds across our heavy underground right now. Cherish it.

Next up at HM it’s Kulk / Concrete Ships / Hollow Blessings / Ritual Error on April 5th then Slowhole & Moloch on the 9th. All bands that you’d have been blown away by if they played on Saturday. Hope to some of your faces down the front. 🫡

Less than three weeks out, and with less than 25% of the tickets remaining, here is your final lineup for our inaugural CRUEL & UNUSUAL gathering.

The final addition to the bill, tying all the many disparate elements of the bill together like the sonic answer to The Dude’s rug, are the undisputed champions of -

Calligram levelled the place playing for us back in Feb last year, and were one of the first bands asked to be involved.

In unfortunate news, PARIAH have had to drop off (we’ll try again to get them back soon as it’s possible).

BUT stepping up in their stead are bringing a barrage of nasty low end doomviolence to help blow away the cobwebs early on. Be ready.

They’ll be joined by the UK’s very finest merchants of melancholia MOLOCH off the back of their new record ‘Bend. Break. Kneel. Crawl.’ out this Friday.

Alright, we’ve waited long enough… time to tell you about another couple of additions to the Cruel & Unusual lineup…

ORYX
Between their crushing opening set at last year’s Damnation Festival and an immense headline show at The Black Heart the following day, ORYX made themselves known to the UK in a BIG way last year. In fact, those sets were so good that we’d invited them back to sub-headline C&U before they could even get on a plane home.

Grand-scale, far-reaching and impossibly heavy sludge/doom from the spiritual home of such noises, Denver CO. Impeccable on record, and unmissable in a live setting. AND they’ll be performing their 2024 opus ‘Primordial Sky’ in full. Truly one of the best records of its kind to come out in the last few years.

If you didn’t get to know ‘em last year, now’s your chance.

HEALING WOUND
This is a band that seem to get better and better with every set they play. Intense, sludgy, violent noise to lose your mind to. They were immense supporting Gillian Carter at TBH a while back, and even better still supporting HELPLESS for us late last year. With a record on the way and in unbelievable form, we’re incredibly stoked to have ‘em back to join the festivities.

FIRST LINEUP ANNNOUNCEMENT

THE SUN’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE NIGHT
Emerging from the shadows to grace our inaugural gathering as headliners, making their reinvigorated full-band return, the enigmatic will bring their bleakest, blackest blasts back to Camden Town for the first time in far too long.

DEATH GOALS
A duo capable of destroying any stage before them (including The Underworld’s supporting last month, and ’s several times) under the sheer weight of their chaotic, emotive, post-everything-core fury. It’s an honour to have one of the best live bands in the country return to Camden to join the festivities.

HOST BODY
Nasty, noisy, claustrophobic chaos of the highest order. Bit like listening to early Dillinger and modern day Full Of Hell beat each other to death with live instruments inside a shipping container. They crushed supporting back in October. Had to get ‘em back.

PARIAH
This lot are serving up one of the harshest, most unhinged takes on metallic hardcore to come out of the UK in a long while - to even call it that feels like an understatement. Their first release ‘Violence Is A Curse’ is a noisy, grinding, bludgeoning dirge - it’s a pleasure to get to unleash that on London for the first time.

WARREN SCHOENBRIGHT
This band played the first note on the first ever hm show for a reason. Schoenbright’s form of desolate audio misery encapsulates everything hm shows should sound like - a soundtrack befitting an apocalypse.

SUNSWARM
And kicking things off, an entirely new offering whose first single drops tomorrow. No spoilers, but it rips. Cacophonous industrial post-metal nihilism, produced by the master of such things,
