F1 community mourns loss of former driver Wilson :

Ex-Formula One driver Justin Wilson has passed away after succumbing to head injuries sustained in a crash in Sunday’s IndyCar race at Pocono in the United States. The former Minardi and Jaguar racer was 37.

Wilson contested the 2003 F1 season, making his debut with Minardi before switching to Jaguar midway through the year to replace Antonio Pizzonia. The British driver scored his best result - an eighth place - at the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

Former rival Jenson Button was among those paying tribute. “The motorsport world comes to a standstill once again,” said the McLaren star on Twitter. “Justin Wilson was a great person and racing driver. My thoughts are with his family.

"I raced with Justin as far back as 1989 in karting and remember his smile was infectious, such a lovely guy."

Formula One group CEO Bernie Ecclestone stated: "I remember Justin Wilson as a talented driver who raced in F1 on merit and enjoyed the respect and affection of his team mates and fellow racers."

One of those team mates, nine-time Grand Prix winner Mark Webber who partnered Wilson at Jaguar in '03, commented: “Last night a very good man left us. Mate. So sorry. RIP Justin. My thoughts are with your loved ones."

Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull (who formed from Jaguar in 2005), said many at their UK base in Milton Keynes had been affected by the news, especially those who had worked with Wilson.

"There are many sad faces at the factory today," he said. "Justin left his mark on many who worked with him during the Jaguar days; he is remembered fondly for the kind and humble person he was.

"I followed his successful career with interest over the years. Justin will be remembered not only as a talented driver but also as quite simply one of the nicest blokes in motorsport.”

Similarly at the Italian factory of Toro Rosso - previously Minardi - former colleagues expressed fond memories. “The Englishman's Formula One career started in 2003, here in Faenza," stated team principal Franz Tost.

"Therefore many of our Scuderia Toro Rosso team members worked with Justin back then, and remember him as a friendly, gentle person and talented true racer. It’s a very sad day."

Wilson’s Pocono crash came after he was struck on the helmet by the nose section of another car, which had broken free after spinning into the wall. The former F3000 champion and seven-time Indycar winner was immediately airlifted to hospital, but died on Monday afternoon.

He is survived by wife Julia and two daughters.

Williams present new car as testing begins in Jerez:

running at the opening pre-season test of 2015 in Jerez, Spain.

As indicated by previously released images, the Mercedes-powered FW37 is a clear evolution of last year’s highly competitive FW36 which carried Williams to nine podiums and third place in the constructors’ standings - the Grove-based team’s highest finish since 2003.

Commenting on the new car, team principal and founder, Sir Frank Williams, said: “After such a strong season in 2014 we are looking to continue the move back towards the front of the grid. The move from ninth to third was a tough challenge, but ultimately every step up from now on will be even harder. I am confident that we have the appropriate personnel and talent in this team to make those steps.

“We have an experienced driver line-up, with both drivers finishing on the podium throughout last year and hungry for more success in 2015, new commercial partners to add to the continued support from our already impressive roster, and have a technical team that is amongst the best on the grid.

“I am looking forward to seeing the car in testing and assessing how other teams have fared over the winter in comparison to us. We should, once again, have a very exciting season ahead of us which will hopefully bring more success to Williams.”

Felipe Massa, who will once again share driving duties with Valtteri Bottas, said the team had every reason to feel upbeat about their prospects for 2015: “The momentum we carry from last year has been very encouraging, the team has changed so much from 12 months ago and it is clear to see everyone is heading in a good direction.

“The development rate of the FW36 was one of the most exciting elements to the car, the team worked exceptionally hard throughout the year to make sure that we had a faster car at each race, and I look forward to a similarly impressive car this year.”

Despite recognising that the team would face increased expectations in 2015, Bottas was similarly optimistic, saying: “Other teams and our fans are expecting a performance like last year, and all the personnel at Williams have been working tirelessly to make sure this is not only achievable but the benchmark for improvement.

“For much of last year we had the second fastest car, and this year we plan to take every opportunity to challenge at the front. After my first podium in 2014 I hope to continue developing as a driver as I aim for my first win. I look forward to working closely with Felipe again this year as we strengthen our relationship to extract the most from the car.”

Bottas, who finished fourth in last year's drivers' standings, will give the FW37 its track debut on Sunday morning.

Red Bull’s black and white RB11 hits the track in Spain:

After surrendering their drivers’ and constructors’ crowns to Mercedes last year, Red Bull have launched the car with which they plan to fight back this season: the Renault-powered RB11, to be raced by Daniel Ricciardo and new team mate Daniel Kvyat.

Featuring a striking new test livery for this week’s opening Jerez session, the RB11 features a host of improvements in all areas as the team seeks to improve on their 2014 campaign, when they took the RB10 from a difficult start to second place in the standings.

The most notable shape change to this year’s car is the lower nose box and front of the chassis, which were amended in line with the latest regulations, but beyond that many of the RB11’s updates are under its all-new black and white skin.

“The design of the RB11 has been very much about understanding what we learned from last season, which was a big regulation change as far as the power unit is concerned and the packaging that goes with that and setting about optimising the car from those lessons,” said Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey.

Chief engineering officer Rob Marshall added: “There are some changes that affect the shape of the front of the car but beyond that most of the changes are under the skin. We’ve identified the areas where we can make improvements and we’ve worked hard on these. There won’t be a lot that’s visible to the naked eye but a lot of hard work has gone into the bits that are hidden.”

A large part of that work has involved improvements to Renault Sport’s Energy F1 power unit, updates that have been made in closer collaboration with the team.

“Red Bull is the only partner for Renault now, through ourselves and Toro Rosso, and that focus from Renault together with a close involvement with our design team is yielding good results and a far closer integration between the power unit and the chassis side,” said team principal Christian Horner. “Working in unison with Renault we can really make some big steps forward this year.”

Newey added that the process of reducing the deficit the team suffered last year will take time: “We have been working very hard with our partners Renault to help them develop the engine. What we have to remember is that the internal combustion engine and its very complicated associated items, the ERS and turbocharger, are long lead time items. Those are things where if one team takes an advantage then it takes time to overthrow that or get back on a par with or hopefully ahead.”

For drivers Ricciardo, a three-time winner with Red Bull last season, and Kvyat, who joins following a successful rookie season with sister team Toro Rosso, the brief two-month wait for a return to the cockpit is over and a first taste of the RB11’s potential awaits in Spain.

“I’m looking forward to driving the RB11 and I’m hanging out to get behind the wheel again. I hope it’s going to be a beast. We’ll soon find out,” said Ricciardo. “There was plenty of pressure on me last year to prove myself in a top team and I think everyone knows now what I’m capable of so I’m excited - excited to build on what we achieved in 2014 and ready to give Mercedes a good fight.”

“It’s going to be very exciting to drive an Infiniti Red Bull Racing car for the first time for me,” added Kvyat. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m really looking forward to finally getting into the car. It’s going to be cool.

“Though many people in the team know me quite well, there is still the challenge of entering a new team for myself. However, I haven’t really set any targets for 2015. I just want to keep doing the best job possible with hard work and the right attitude and that’s the best thing I can do.”

On Red Bull’s aims for 2015, Horner concluded: “Our target is simple: to close down the gap to Mercedes yet further. We were the only team other than Mercedes to win a Grand Prix in 2014 and we won three with Daniel Ricciardo.

"Our target is to close the gap down and put Mercedes under as much pressure as we possibly can. We know what we’re aiming at, we know what we need to achieve and I believe that with the RB11, with the drivers we have and with the new structures put in place we should be able to do that.”

Ricciardo will be first to put the RB11 through its paces in Spain on Sunday. The Australian is also due to drive on Tuesday, while Kvyat assumes driving duties on Monday and Wednesday.

Toro Rosso debut the STR10 in Spain:

Toro Rosso took the wraps off their 2015 car in the Jerez pit lane on Saturday afternoon, just a few hours before the first of this year’s three pre-season tests gets underway at the Spanish circuit.

The Renault-powered STR10 will be raced by the team’s all-rookie driver line-up of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr, with the latter due behind the wheel first on Sunday.

The STR10 has been produced under the technical directorship of James Key, and chief designers Paolo Marabini and Matteo Piraccini. Built by the Italian team at their Faenza base, it owes its shape to the efforts of Toro Rosso’s wind tunnel staff in Bicester in the UK.

"The car is a real mix of very different approaches in some areas, while also refining and developing what we felt were some of the more solid philosophies of the 2014 car," Key told Toro Rosso’s website. "It will look quite different by the time we get to Race 1 and we've got several very new ideas which have gone into it, which the team is exploring for the first time, which makes it an interesting project.

“We've pushed the limits of timing much more with STR10 than with past cars and we're dealing with it really well. We have a pretty aggressive plan for development. We'll turn up to Race 1 with a fundamentally different car to the one we run in testing."

Team principal Franz Tost, who led the squad to seventh place in last year’s constructors’ championship, is aiming higher for this year, commenting: "The launch of the new STR10 car today here in Jerez de la Frontera marks the start of a new and hopefully thrilling F1 season.

"The 2015 season is a new challenge for all of us. We've put a lot of work into the STR10 and we are convinced that we will have a successful year. Our objective is to finish fifth in the constructors championship and we are ready to do our best to achieve it.

“Our engine partner Renault has also worked very hard to come up with new modifications and I'm sure that our joint effort will give us a package which will certainly be very competitive. All in all, we have a much stronger team as well as a very competitive STR10 and fast drivers; it's a great combination.”

Sainz, who will be testing on Sunday and Tuesday, said he was delighted to be debuting the STR10 in his home country, commenting: "I am very happy to be making my first official appearance as a Formula One driver here in Spain and I am looking forward to trying the car for the first time tomorrow.

“I have worked very hard over the winter on my personal fitness, as well as spending time in Faenza to familiarise myself with the team, having also done some days in the simulator. Now we have just 12 days to prepare for Melbourne, so going through all the race weekend procedures will be a priority for me, as well as putting in as many miles as possible behind the wheel."

Dutch team mate Verstappen, 17, said he is equally keen to get on with preparations for his Grand Prix debut in March, when he will become the youngest F1 racer in history: "I can't wait for the season to start and tomorrow will seem like a very long day, watching Carlos in the car!

“With two days in the 2014 car at the Abu Dhabi test and the Friday mornings I did last season, combined with time spent in the simulator, I feel well prepared and I'm really up for this challenge, which is very exciting. Six days on track here in Spain and then it will be time to head for Australia and my first Grand Prix, something I have been looking forward to ever since I started karting."
