Serial Killers: The Blood & Tears Walk

Serial Killers: The Blood & Tears Walk Hi, I'm Declan. I do a classic London walk on Serial Killers.

25 years. 60,000+ people. Unique selling Point? Declan here. I've had over 1000 5-star reviews.

Most such tours in London focus on 'Jack' but I talk about him PLUS 9 MORE in 2 hours. Also, I'm a story-teller, not a dry fact declarer. I researched, wrote and perform this acclaimed, chilling, interactive and illustrated thought-provoking serial killer walk featuring serial killers from London, Britain and Worldwide (not just Jack The Ripper...). I also include criminal profiling exercises, and

fun little quizzes for the Group. The tour itself may get creepy and disturbing (how could it be otherwise?), but I myself am friendly and engaging. Come along, you will have a good time!

The following situation has happened many times and I love it.

When she turned up with a bunch of other people this week, a woman from the USA told me she’d been on my serial killer tour ten years ago.

Her ‘Criminology and Drama’ class were over from the USA for a few days, and their teacher was looking for a suitable London walking tour to go on that would tie in with those studies.

Rachel looked me up, saw I was still doing the tour, and told the teacher “I know the tour to do”.

As a result of that recommendation, based on her first experience of the tour ten years ago, Rachel’s entire class of 17 came along last week.

I love this kind of ‘word-of-mouth’ karma.

I guide a tour to the best of my ability, a seed is planted in someone’s memory, and a decade later I reap further rewards.

Well, well, well. Guess who came along on the tour last night!

Lauren Laverne on the right of me in the photo.

Presenter of ‘Desert Island Discs’, Radio 6 presenter, former pop star (‘Kenickie’), author, columnist, and a lot more besides.

Lauren is very calm, pleasant, and a very good listener (being presenter of ‘Desert Island Discs’ helps hone that skill, I’m sure!).

From references she made last night, she's also clearly knowledgeable about the sort of material I deal with on the tour.

On the immediate left of me in the photo: Caitlin Moran. Columnist extraordinaire, presenter, novelist, series writer and, like Lauren, much, much more.

Caitlin is instantly recognisable and a force of nature!

I’ve liked her attitude, expressed in articles and books like ‘How to be a Woman’ and ‘What about Men’, for years.

She's feisty, smart, funny and relatable.

It was fantastic that they came along!

(Apologies that I don't know their friends).

This is quite a moment for me – my 1,000th 5-star review on TripAdvisor for my serial killer tour!

That’s a lot of wandering between Barbican and Holborn stations over the years! I like to joke that civilisations come and go, but the tour goes on forever…

The 1000th 5-star review ties in nicely with the very nearly 10,000 copies so far sold of my ‘Bloody London’ book.

So, what have I learnt about the many thousands of people who have come on the tour to date? That they are genuinely very nice people, very far from being the wild-eyed, cruel-hearted types some might assume like this material.

They are people interested in what makes serial killers tick (as am I), and the vast majority are women. As one woman put it: “Your tour is like a self-defence class for women’. That’s a huge compliment - and not a bad legacy.

The very first TripAdvisor 5-star review, back in 2009, said “…it was amazing! was definitely the best "tourist" activity which I have ever done…Declan was fantastic. Couldn't fault it”.

The most recent 5-star review said “…Declan knows so much…he knows how to get everyone engaged in the whole experience until the very end of the tour, it’s so entertaining that one can barely notice that one has been walking for 2 hours!”

I’m giving a link here to the tour on GetYourGuide because I’d like more bookings and reviews on that site too….

Thanks to all past and future attendees. You are greatly appreciated.

A funny quote from the Serial Killer tour last night.

One of the people on the Tour, a Dad in a family of 4, said as we were walking down to where I start the tour: “I’ve told them that if the first thing you say is “Have you told anyone you’re here?”, we’re leaving”.

I then told the group about the time that only one person turned up.

I'm a professional and I put the same effort in whether it's 1 person or 84 people (the biggest number I've had on the Tour).

So I did the entire Tour just for this one student - macabre, immersive true crime stories about serial killers, in deserted grim and creepy alleys - and at the end he wrote with a slightly shaky hand in my visitor’s book:

“Thank you for not killing me”.

And he meant it!

Possibly as a result of the 5-star reviews for my Halloween night tour, I've shot up into the top 8 results, out of over 1000 results, for London Walking Tours on Viator.

Halloween Night was epic for a couple of reasons.

One is that 41 people turned up, and a nicer, jollier crew I could not have hoped for. Look at those smiling faces!

Secondly, the rainfall was also epic. Honestly, top 5 worst weather conditions in 24 years. Did it put them off? Not at all. They heroically stuck with the Tour and I've since had 4 5-star reviews (and only 5-star reviews) praising my efforts on the night.

This was absolutely one of my favourite Halloween nights ever!

THANK YOU EVERYBODY!

My camera took this photo totally accidentally, but I thought it summed up a Tour Guide's life quite nicely, and I like serendipity, so here it is exactly as it was taken...

“Don’t you know clowns can get away with murder?”
Quote from John Wayne Gacy to investigators.

This previously unpublished photo of John Wayne Gacy, in clown costume, was taken in the summer of 1978. It was sent to me for this Facebook post, by a recent attendee of my Serial Killer tour.

The people in the photo, are the attendee’s friend’s mother, her grandmother, and ‘Pogo the Clown’ - Gacy.

The park is Chicago’s Norwood Park, a short distance away from 8213 West Summerdale Avenue, Gacy’s notorious house. A house that had a 'crawl space' that would forever after taint the phrase.

At the park that hot summer’s day, Grandmother wanted a photo of her and her granddaughter with the smiling ‘Pogo’. The young girl wasn’t keen because Gacy was creepy and smelled bad but posed for her grandmother’s sake.

‘Pogo’ had killed 30 men by this photo; his confession to the murders, on 22nd December 1978, was less than 6 months away.

When the news broke that late December day, I was on my way home to my parents’ house for Christmas.

The immensity of the evil I was reading about was chilling, more so because it was the ‘season of peace and goodwill to all men’.

Little did I know in 1978 that a good part of my life in the future would be taken up with thinking and talking about Gacy and his horrendous ilk.

5 victims remain unnamed but they are not forgotten, and sterling efforts continue to find out who those men were and to bring closure to families.
