Philrarmonia debates:usuc & Sexuality

What impact does a composer’s sexuality have on the music they write? Does awareness of a composer’s sexuality affect a performer’s or listener’s response to their work? Speakers from the world of classical music and beyond lead the discussion, ahead of our concert featuring music by Britten, Ravel and Tchaikovksy – come and have your say.

Donna Gottschalk (b. 1949, New York) grew up in the tenements of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1950s, where she spent much of her time on the streets. This backdrop, often of violence and homophobia, shaped her and the way she saw the world: raw, real and up close.

Involved in the early le***an, trans and gay rights movements, her intimate photographs of the daily lives of her chosen family – friends, lovers, siblings and fellow activists – are a tender portrait of people living on the margins. At a time when gay relationships were still illegal in the US, she described the people she photographed as ‘brave and defiant warriors.’

John Minton
Figure on the beach, 1956

His work during the war found him critical notoriety among the young British artists known as the Neo-Romantics alongside John Piper and Graham Sutherland. As a result he was well established by the time he was in his mid-twenties, and well into a prosperous teaching career around the ex*****on of this painting in 1948. His life in London was a varied and turbulent one, and few images from his career manage to represent the depth of this turbulence than his portraits.

Minton was q***r, exuberantly so, at a time when homosexuality was a criminal offence. . Minton struggled with alcohol addiction and depression and commit su***de at the age of 39.

Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun: Artists, Lovers, Outsiders

The two Roberts were Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde. Both from working-class Scottish backgrounds, Colquhoun and MacBryde won grants to attend Glasgow School of Art in 1933 where they met and became lovers. Friends and contemporaries of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, the Roberts enjoyed huge success in the 1940s and 1950s. However their work is relatively little known today.

They were huge in the 1940s, but their descent into penury was vertiginous and complete – throughout the 1950s they struggled to find the money for food. There are several reasons for this. One is that they were difficult individuals who did not suffer fools gladly and were never going to ingratiate themselves with the right people, or in fact with anybody. Another is simply bad luck. Their dealer, Duncan MacDonald of the Lefevre Gallery, died in 1949 just at the moment they most needed support, when they moved out of London. He was one of the few people who knew how to handle them: with a mixture of tact and commercial know-how, backed by a firm belief in their work.

Q***r Modernism
1900 to 1950
At K20 K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen

The first comprehensive exhibition in Europe dedicated to the significant contributions of q***r artists to modernism. Featuring more than 130 works by thirty-four international artists – including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, films, publications, and archival materials – the exhibition project focuses on the first half of the twentieth century.

It tells an alternative history of modernism, one in which q***r artists placed themes such as desire, gender, sexuality, and the politics of self-representation at the center of their work. It also traces stories of q***r life in times of war and resistance. Including artists such as Claude Cahun, Hannah Höch, Jean Cocteau, Romaine Brooks, Marlow Moss or Richmond Barthé.

Until 15 February 2026
