Before the show began we were lucky enough to interview the real Brian, one of the real reporters in Gander in those 5 days.

As our time on The Rock comes to an end, and in a world climate that is somewhat fraught right now. We really feel these words from Brian are incredibly powerful!

Head of an environmental energy company in LA, Kevin was on vacation with his secretary come boyfriend (also Kevin) when they are stranded in Gander.
Whilst Kevin T managed to relax into life in Gander, fear for his family back in New York made Kevin J anxious to get back to them.
Kevin T set up the Pay it Forward foundation following his time in Gander.

Tom McKeown was returning to his native NYC when he was diverted to Gander.
Tom found the friendly and open population of Newfoundland very difficult to come to terms with having been a New Yorker all his life. However after 5 days in Gander his steely New York demeanour was softened
His experiences and the experiences of other New Yorkers are portrayed by the character “Bob”

She struck up a real life long friendship with Hannah O’Rourke who’s son is a firefighter at Ground Zero.

Hannah O’Rourke was the mother of a firefighter in Manhattan, Hannah waits for news about her son and is comforted by Beulah with the two striking up a lifelong friendship.
Hannah passed away aged 91 on August 10th 2025, her “greatest joy,” according to her obituary, “was making her home a Ceili House, a place where family, friends, and newcomers would gather.”

Continuing to understand the real people who inspired Come from Away!

In 2001, Janice Goudie was settling into a new job as a local news reporter in Gander, when news of the attacks first started trickling in. Not a local to Gander the relevance of the airports history became very apparent to her across those 5 days. Her character in the show is an amalgamation of her self and fellow reporter Brian Mosher.

As Gander’s municipal police officer, Fudge provided traffic services and patrols as well as simply talking to many of the passengers, calming their nerves and reassuring them that everything was fine. Among the many things he did, he was asked to deliver a hug when a passengers sister rang the police department and asked someone hug her sister.
