We are pleased to share memories of an important talk with Ukrainian war photographer Evgeniy Maloletka.

That evening, Evgeniy met an audience from both from British and Ukrainian communities that had seen his photos on the front pages of international media, while he himself had not yet fully realised their significance.

We would like to thank our main partner of the night, Ukraine Charity, and Evgeniy for donating his photographs for the auction that we held to support the Families of Azovstal Defenders. That night we all managed to raise £2450.

We are immensely grateful to Evgeniy for trusting us with this, to our partners in Ukraine who have joined forces with us to spread the word of Evgeniy’s upcoming book that you can order via the link in our profile. If you wish to get a copy signed by the author, please write to us.

We are also grateful to our information partners, the Embassy of Ukraine in the UK and Ukrainian Institute London, and to the French Institute for hosting the event in their beautiful library. We could not think of a more fitting location for the book launch.

Our thanks also extend to our volunteers and the photographers that have created the memories of the night that we are sharing with you.

We are pleased to share memories of an important talk with Ukrainian war photographer Evgeniy Maloletka.

That evening, Evgeniy met an audience both from British and Ukrainian communities that had seen his photos on the front pages of international media, while he himself had not yet fully realised their significance.

Довгоочікувана зустріч двох важливих свідків історичних подій.
Журналіста Євгена Малолєтки, що опинився в оточеному Маріуполі разом з його мешканцями, продовжував фіксувати військові злочини та, в умовах інформаційної блокади, передавав знімки світові.
Та нині посла України у Великобританії Валерія Залужного, що на той момент був Головнокомандувачем Збройних сил країни, яка чинила опір, та приймав одні з найважливіших та складних стратегічних рішень, які визначили хід війни.
Люди, які захоплюють прикладом власної стійкості та незламності.

📅 28 March London, join us for a book presentation of “Siege of Mariupol” by Evgeniy Maloletka, followed by a conversation with the author, moderated by Lori Hinnant.
From the first days of the full-scale invasion, Maloletka documented life and death inside a besieged city. In this book, he shares deeply personal reflections while documenting war crimes, revealing the horrors that unfolded on the city’s streets, in its basements, and in its hospitals. It is a story about refusing to look away.
Come to hear the story behind the images, explore the reality of war journalism, and reflect on the role of photography in documenting truth.
Evgeniy Maloletka
A photojournalist who has been documenting the war in Ukraine since 2014.
He is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner (2023) in Public Service and Breaking News Photography, and the recipient of the World Press Photo of the Year (2023) for his image from the Mariupol maternity hospital. His work has also been recognised with numerous international awards.
Lori Hinnant
A reporter on the Associated Press global investigative team. She earned the George Polk Award for War Reporting for her coverage of Ukraine, including documenting the Russian attack on Mariupol and investigating torture sites and mass civilian deaths.

Last week, we had a very special lesson in the history of Ukraine’s culture from the architect behind of the MUR project . Oleksandr Khomenko and the team are swiftly changing the perception of how we read history today and conquering the hearts of the younger generation of Ukrainians.

On Thursday our own knowledge was challenged, as we read poetry and tried to bring back to life the generation of artists that the system tried to silence, yet whom are remembered today. Voronyi, Tychyna, Elan-Blakytnyi, and others were with us that night.

Together with the audience, Oleksandr took us on this journey into the past, swinging between laughter and pain and honouring those who continue to live today.
