Discover Young Hackney is an award-winning festival that started in 2007 and has become an annual highlight of Hackney’s cultural calendar. It encourages young people’s creativity and helps them discover pathways into training and careers in the arts through an exciting programme of events. Activities are designed for 13 to 19 year olds by 16 specially commissioned arts, community and youth organi
sations. Young people are involved in the design of many of the programmes, complementing opportunities in schools and youth clubs. The umbrella festival involves over 150 artists, 50 volunteers, 400 young participants and over 3,000 audience members using venues across the borough and contributing to the local economy. With help from industry professionals a range of taster sessions, workshops and events. The festival is launched with the Alter Ego a showcase of young talent at the Hackney Empire. The event is built around a live audition process, much like the popular TV talent competitions. Much of the festival programme comprises a number of other providers.
