Extreme heat is already having a measurable impact on UK workplaces.

Research from the London School of Economics found that the June 2026 heatwave resulted in 24 million lost working hours and an estimated £1.15 billion in lost economic output.

A new report from The Physiological Society, launched this week at the Houses of Parliament, is now calling for changes to how extreme heat is managed across the UK workforce, including clearer thresholds, updated regulations and better guidance for employers.

For workplace and facilities teams, that raises practical questions around building performance, ventilation, cooling, working conditions and how organisations prepare for periods of extreme heat.

🌱 What does it take to become a workplace leader?

It might be tempting to think leadership is about having all the answers. But according to Fiona Stewart, Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Salford, it starts with something much simpler: curiosity.

In this clip from the Workplace Geeks x Workplace Leaders Top 50, Fiona shares her advice for the next generation of workplace leaders:
Ask questions. Be curious. Explore outside your own bubble. Take risks. And, importantly, be a nice human.

For Fiona, leadership isn't just about developing your own skills and knowledge. It's also about helping others, sharing what you know and bringing people up with you.

It's a reminder that some of the most valuable leadership qualities aren't necessarily found on a job description, they're built through curiosity, collaboration and the way we support the people around us.

🤖 What if AI's biggest opportunity isn't productivity, but potential?

AI is everywhere in conversations about the future of work. But while much of the focus is on automation and efficiency, could its real value be in helping people understand and develop their own potential?

Scott Wilson, People Development Partner at Vodafone 3, believes so.

In this clip from the Workplace Geeks x Workplace Leaders Top 50, Scott explores the potential of an agentic approach to AI, where technology can support genuinely personalised development by tailoring learning, providing relevant resources and creating stretch goals specific to the individual.

It's a shift from simply asking "What can AI do for me?" to asking "What could AI help me become?"

For workplace and people leaders, that's an interesting challenge—and an opportunity to rethink how we approach learning, development and ownership of our careers.

🏢 What if the changing workplace gives us more freedom to experiment?

Hybrid working has challenged many of the assumptions we once had about what an office should look like, how people should use it and even what a typical working day should be.

But for Catherine Murphy, Director of Workplace Experience at Mastercard, that uncertainty also creates an opportunity.

In this clip from the Workplace Geeks x Workplace Leaders Top 50, Catherine shares why workplace leaders should be willing to dig deeper, take risks and experiment beyond the transactional.

From testing different approaches to team days and space utilisation to rethinking how we engage different groups of employees, the workplace doesn't have to follow the same rulebook it always has.

And perhaps that's one of the biggest opportunities in workplace right now: we have more freedom than ever to test, learn and rethink what works.

☀️ It’s hot. The dress code says one thing. Your employees say another…

With another spell of 30°C+ , the age-old workplace debate is back:

Are shorts actually acceptable in the office?

New Ipsos polling suggests attitudes are changing, with more than 60% of UK adults now saying tailored shorts are acceptable during hot weather.

But where should employers draw the line? And when does a traditional dress code become impractical during extreme heat?
From breathable fabrics and smarter summer styling to considerations around employee wellbeing, disabilities and medical conditions, there’s more to the debate than simply deciding whether flip-flops are allowed.

So, should your office dress code be altered during summer heatwaves? ☀️

🤖 If AI is changing how we work, is it also changing how we become experts?

As artificial intelligence takes over more routine tasks, one important question is emerging: If the traditional apprenticeship disappears, how does the next generation develop the experience needed to become tomorrow's leaders?

In this clip from the latest episode of the Workplace Geeks x Workplace Leaders Top 50, Elaine du Preez, Director of Workplace Design, EMEA at Salesforce, shares why she believes AI has disrupted the traditional route to mastery and why organisations need to rethink how they develop talent.

It's a conversation that's relevant far beyond workplace design. From facilities management and HR to technology, operations and leadership, every profession is beginning to ask the same question.
