Did you know that despite its name, the English Breakfast Tea did not originate in Britain. While it’s now considered a staple British breakfast tea, often enjoyed with milk and sugar, the blend is believed to have originated in America. ☕
While there are other origin stories, one popular story traces back to Richard Davies. Richard was an English immigrant and tea merchant in New York around 1843, who introduced the bold, black tea blend to suit the hearty breakfast tradition. Some also credit Scottish tea master Drysdale, who is said to have created an early version by combining Assam, Ceylon, and Keemun teas.
🫅🏼However, "Breakfast Tea" gained popularity after Queen Victoria reportedly enjoyed it during her stay at Balmoral Castle. She then brought this tea back to England, and it became known as "English Breakfast Tea."
Over time, it found its way to British tables and became a morning essential. Wherever it began, English Breakfast remains a timeless cup that perfectly pairs with the start of the day.
