I am saddened to hear of Richard Alston’s passing. Like so many of us, I grew to know Richard as a student, looking up to him as I began to find my own way in contemporary dance. A pioneer of the form yet in every encounter, I was met with such kindness and encouragement.

It feels particularly meaningful now that Angela Towler, Chris Tudor and Isabel Tamen are such an important part of Akram Khan Company. They each danced for Richard and through them, I feel connected to the world I first encountered as a student - a world Richard helped to define.

It is now our collective responsibility to ensure that the legacy of these great leaders of British contemporary dance continues to inspire and is passed on.

‘For me, the body is the most truthful and poetic way of communicating what you’re feeling, because you can’t say that in words. Because we have these invisible walls around us. Perhaps the other person might be offended. The body has a way that is much more metaphoric in many ways, so it feels less threatening. I can talk about stuff through my dance, and people will hopefully still be open to it than if I were to put it in words.’

As the team begins to revisit the Company’s archive ahead of next year’s transition, we’re finding our way back to the beginnings of so many works. These images from the creation of iTMOi (In the Mind of Igor) take us back to a room full of possibilities, before the piece had found its form on stage.
Created by Akram in response to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, iTMOi remains one of the works he returns to often in conversation, even more than a decade later.

We’re reflecting on our recent return to the US for the US premiere of Thikra, made all the more memorable by the generous welcome of two exceptional organisations committed to dance; Lincoln Center and Jacob's Pillow.

Images of the Company’s time at Jacob's Pillow where the beautiful surroundings and shared love of dance made it an inspiring place to reconnect. Thank you to everyone who joined us - we look forward to returning to the West Coast in autumn.

Tomorrow brings the final performance of Lady Macbeth at Opera House, Copenhagen. It has been a real privilege for Akram to work side by side with the artists and team of Royal Danish Ballet to create such a deeply layered reimagining of this story.

Copenhagen, thank you for stepping into the shadows with us.
