HAPPY WORLD TOURISM DAY 2025!

As we celebrate World Tourism Day 2025, the International Tourism Investment Corporation Ltd (ITIC) acknowledges the significant impact tourism has on our global community. It serves as a powerful engine for economic growth, cultural exchange, and environmental sustainability. Tourism holds the unique ability to bridge cultural divides, foster mutual understanding, and promote peace.

At ITIC, we view tourism as a force for good—one that generates revenue, creates jobs, and invigorates local economies. Our mission is to encourage dialogue among tourism industry leaders and stakeholders centred on sustainable development. We collaborate with governments, investors, and project owners to form joint ventures and structure investments that benefit all parties involved.

As we look to the future, we recognise the pivotal role of digitalisation in transforming the tourism landscape. Digital technologies are redefining the tourism value chain, allowing for personalised experiences, streamlined operations, and data-driven decision-making. By harnessing the power of digitalisation, we can elevate visitor experiences, boost operational efficiency, and promote sustainable growth within the tourism sector.

The tourism industry has displayed remarkable resilience in overcoming various challenges, including global economic downturns, pandemics, and natural disasters. We applaud the sector's ability to adapt, innovate, and bounce back, and we urge continued investment in measures that strengthen resilience to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.

The tourism industry has also shown remarkable resilience in the face of challenges, from global economic downturns to pandemics and natural disasters. We commend the sector's ability to adapt, innovate, and recover, and we encourage continued investment in resilience-building measures to ensure the industry's long-term sustainability.

In reflecting on the current state of the world, we hope that the virtues of tourism prevail, bringing peace and understanding to regions in turmoil, such as Ukraine and Palestine, as well as other areas scarred by conflict and division. May tourism's universal language of hospitality, respect, and appreciation for diverse cultures help heal wounds, build bridges, and cultivate a spirit of global citizenship.

We invite governments, industry leaders, and individuals to come together to invest in tourism, prioritise sustainability, and uplift local communities. Together, we can harness the full potential of tourism to drive positive change and create a more peaceful and prosperous world.

Dr. Taleb Rifai
Chairman
International Tourism Investment Corporation Ltd (ITIC)
and Former Secretary-General, United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)

30/05/2025

Today, the 30th of May, marks a significant moment in shaping the future of global tourism, as it coincides with the election of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism) for the next four years. This position entails considerable responsibilities, as the elected individual must effectively manage global tourism and foster collaboration among nations to promote cultural exchange, new discoveries, and peace through tourism.

I have observed this responsibility firsthand through my experiences with my Chairman, Dr. Taleb Rifai, a respected figure in international tourism, from whom I have learned extensively over the past few years. However, today, a contender has emerged who is committed to enacting transformative changes and structural reforms to revitalise the organisation in light of the challenges it has faced over the past eight years since Dr. Rifai terminated his two-term mandate from the UNWTO.

Today, a new candidate is emerging who is fully dedicated to promoting unity among all nations and restoring credibility to the organisation. His vision articulates a profound commitment to advancing peace through tourism globally. Originating from Greece, he embodies a spirit of inclusivity, engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and faiths without prejudice. He is recognised as a leader in the context of a global village, proactively seeking solutions instead of merely discussing problems. A long-term strategic vision accompanies his results-oriented mindset.

I have observed his leadership qualities in various contexts, particularly during my travels across Africa. It is often said that the true character of an individual is revealed during such journeys, and I can attest that this candidate possesses the vision necessary to advance the future of global tourism and foster collaboration among nations.

Furthermore, he has formulated a comprehensive development plan for the African continent, which he refers to as "Mission 100." For an insightful perspective, I recommend listening to his remarks during the fireside chat at the ITIC Europe-Africa Summit held on the 5th of May 2025 at the Grand Resort Lagonissi in Athens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTUysU2Bu38 . You will understand how passionate he is about Africa.

This individual is unequivocally Harry Theoharis, the former Minister of Tourism for Greece, and with the hope that he will be elected to the position of Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organisation. His enthusiastic responses to inquiries reflect his steadfast commitment and vigour in realising the potential of the African continent.

In addition to his aspirations for Africa, he aims to strengthen connections among all continents, thereby enhancing global unity and peace through tourism.

If I were to encapsulate Harry in just SEVEN words, I would choose: Brilliant, Broad-minded, Equality, Passionate, Results-driven, Solutions-focused, and Inspiring. Each of these words reflects not only his exceptional intellect and creativity but also his open-minded approach to diverse perspectives. He embodies a deep passion for his work, which fuels his relentless pursuit of excellence and tangible outcomes. Furthermore, Harry consistently demonstrates an ability to find innovative solutions to complex problems, inspiring those around him to strive for their best.

Without diminishing the merit of the other candidates, and as a representative of our interconnected global community, I express my hope that all participating nations will make a judicious decision in their support of Harry. I extend my best wishes to you, Harry, as you embark on this electoral journey, which will undoubtedly serve as a significant milestone in your career.

God Bless!

Since its inception in 2018, ITIC has strongly committed to empowering and nurturing entrepreneurship among women in the tourism sector. Through the organisation of various global summits, ITIC has facilitated high-level discussions among industry leaders on critical topics such as entrepreneurship, gender equality, and access to financing for women-led initiatives. It is noteworthy that, in recent years, women have increasingly assumed leadership roles across different facets of the hospitality industry, and we anticipate that this trend will continue in accordance with their qualifications and merits for such positions.

We extend our best wishes on this International Women’s Day.
