With King Charles III recently making headlines across the pond, it’s the perfect time to revisit the moment he shared with the late, great Dame Hilary Mantel.

During her 2015 investiture, the then-Prince admitted he was a huge fan of the Wolf Hall —a fun confession given that critics at the time were busy comparing his own "treacherous" inner circle at Clarence House to the cutthroat Tudor court of Thomas Cromwell. Mantel gracefully laughed off the comparison as "exaggerated," but seeing the modern monarchy still navigating its own high-stakes drama in 2026, it’s clear that the line between historical fiction and royal reality remains as thin (and entertaining) as ever.

How Cromwell’s choice shaped a queen.
We talk with Rosemary Griggs (Lady Katherine's farthingale) about Kat Ashley who is one of those figures who sits quietly at the edge of the main historic narrative of Wolf Hall and yet, on closer inspection, proves indispensable to it.

Readers of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall Trilogy often say the novels feel intensely physical — you know when you’ve crossed a threshold, moved parish, stepped into danger — even if you couldn’t immediately point it out on a modern map.

We spoke to Matt Brown from the Londonist who will be joining our London event in June - walking the places named in the trilogy from the Tower area through the City and up towards Austin Friars, Cromwell’s long-time London base.

Matt Brown’s Wolf Hall maps — and how they can help the way we see Cromwell's world.
