The UK is falling behind the space curve. It’s time to move from stasis to strategy.

At Tuesday's Select Committee session on science diplomacy, Will Whitehorn OBE, Chair of Space-comm Expo and Seraphim Space Investment Trust was clear on his view of the state of UK government's position on Space and national security:

“We’re not match fit at all at the moment.”

“We have a moment of clear and present danger to the United Kingdom and we are not seeing government engaging in that.”

He pointed to the pace elsewhere:

“The German government… has created a space budget 10 times the size of the UK’s overnight, within four months.”

And the consequences for our industrial base:

“In the last year and a bit we’ve slipped to number five… We’ve gone from being 10th to 17th by investment volume.”

Will's call‑to‑action was crystal clear:

“Unlock the resources immediately… like the National Wealth Fund.”

“Up the money to the British Business Bank and NSIF.”

“Bring forward legislation to unlock the City of London to attract IPOs, companies like ICEYE should be coming here to float, not going to the United States.”

“The UK should have capability to observe the northern North Sea, we do not have it at the moment.”

“We’ll never reach net zero without space. It’s as simple as that.”

The UK’s advantage won’t be preserved by heritage alone (insurance, regulation, law). It will be earned by getting deals done, funding dual‑use tech, and building sovereign capabilities - now, not after another review.
