A short distance from the Lodge is Cefn Ogo, the hillside pass traditionally linked with the capture of King Richard II in August 1399.
According to local history, Richard travelled through this narrow route beneath the limestone cliffs believing he was under safe conduct, before being confronted and taken into custody by the Earl of Northumberland’s men. The event marked the beginning of the end of his reign.
Even today, the landscape feels remarkably untouched. The caves and cliffs still overlook the old route through the valley, giving a real sense of the history attached to this part of North Wales.
One of the many fascinating stories connected to the landscape surrounding Tan-yr-Ogo Lodge and the Gwrych Castle Estate.
