No more navigating muddy verges or walking in the road on Stanbridge Road! 🚲✨

Following persistent campaigning from Leighton Buzzcycles, Central Bedfordshire Council has completed the 300m shared-use path past the DVSA site.

"This new path is a huge win for local residents... Seeing a dangerous, muddy gap transformed into a safe, accessible route for walkers, wheelers, and cyclists will make everyday trips so much easier," says Chris Stevenson, our Planning & Campaigns Lead.

We’ve already updated OpenStreetMap, so route planners like Komoot, Strava, and CycleStreets will automatically send you along this new safe link. 🗺️📱

Great to see the new Leighton Leisure and Community Centre up and running! 🚴‍♂️👍

Credit where it’s due to Central Bedfordshire Council: the on-site active travel infrastructure here sets a really high standard.

The good news? Around 80–90% of local journeys to the new centre from across town can already be completed safely via quiet, low-traffic residential streets.

The missing piece? Connecting those final 10–20% network gaps—like the pinch points along Vandyke Road—so residents in Linslade and older estates have a safe, continuous route all the way to the front door.

📸Swipe through our photos:
1️⃣ The New Facility: Front view of the Leighton Leisure and Community Centre entrance.
2️⃣ Approach Path: Smooth, wide shared-use paths right up to the building.
3️⃣ Covered Cycle Racks: Sheltered Sheffield stands directly overlooked by the café for great security.
4️⃣ Bike Storage: Secure cycle hangar facilities provided on site for staff.
5️⃣ On-Street Pinch Points: Navigating close passes around parked cars on Vandyke Road where residential parking narrows the carriageway.
6️⃣ The Network Gap: The Vandyke School corridor, where a nearly continuous cycle path drops out for just 200m, forcing riders onto the busy main road right outside the school.

Massive thanks to everyone who attended Thursday night's Leighton Buzzard screening of the People's Emergency Briefing (National Emergency Briefing) organised together with Leighton-Linslade Town Council Official and Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre. There was a fantastic turnout and a great discussion afterwards led by Christine Sheppard from South Bedfordshire Friends of the Earth. Really appreciated that our local MP, Alex Mayer was able to attend and shared her own thoughts and reactions. She encouraged constituents to flood her inbox with emails and write to her about the issue of climate change and encouraged other groups (schools, churches etc) to show the film. You can do that via https://www.nebriefing.org/write-to-mp 💚
If you are interested in organising a screening you should sign up on NEB website (and message me if you want any advice) and you will be sent details. Now to focus on the rest of the events programme for Great Big Green Week LB throughout June. This includes a screening of POWER Film organised by Buzz Community Energy which is being screened on Thursday 11th June as well many other great community events such as talks, climate cafe, the next Repair Cafe LB and Borrow&Buzz session, foraging, learn to mend session, learn to cycle session, chance to visit eco home and more 💚 Find out more at https://linktr.ee/leightonbuzzard or https://www.greatbiggreenweek.org
