Happy birthday to us.
Exactly 10 years ago today, myself and a few friends decided to put on a few horror short films in the basement of Nash Interiors as you can (sort of) see from the pics. It was a rather rough affair, but we showed some solid films and everyone had a great evening… but that may have been down to the nibbles we put out for everyone.
Who knew that things would grow from there and I'd be here, 10 years later, the proud father of Short Stack having shown hundreds of short films from some very talented filmmakers to an always friendly and supportive audience.
It's a been a fun journey over the 10 years where, in the first couple of years, I had the pleasure of doing two screenings at Nash Interiors before heading over to the Writers Studio for a screening as part of Scalarama. From there, I rebranded to Short Stack and set up my first home when Rough Trade Nottingham opened it's doors and kindly let me in.
The Rough Trade years were lots of fun, despite the fact that the chipboard seating was unkind on your behind and sometimes it was hard to see the screen. We held several special nights there, including a Fan Film night, a Student Filmmaker night, a Female Filmmaker night and then finishing up with a very bumpy Micro-shorts night where my laptop (from which we were playing the films) decided to reboot and run updates halfway through the screening.
From there, Short Stack moved over to Broadway where we’ve been ever since. Broadway has been the perfect home for us as it is the centre of the filmmaking community in Nottingham. The technical, box office, behind the scenes and bar team at Broadway have always done everything they can to ensure the nights run smooth and that everyone’s films look the best they can on the big screen.
The one thing I’ve always enjoyed most about running Short Stack is talking to the filmmakers. Short Stack is a filmmaker focussed festival and we’ve always pushed to make it as welcoming and friendly as it can be. I wanted it to be a place for filmmaking talent to come together, share their work and future ideas.
Finally, I’d just like to thank everyone who has supported Short Stack over the years. We wouldn’t be here without the support of so many people, far too many to mention. But in short, I’d like to thank all the venues, the venue staff, the audiences and most of all the filmmakers….especially those who dread it when I ask them to intro their film.
We’ll be having a special, 10th anniversary screening, later on in the year. Do keep your eye out for that because it would be great to celebrate our birthday in style.
Thanks again and see you soon.
