Established in 1887, the Leicestershire Rugby Union (LRU) has a rich history of rugby. The union was created after a number of local clubs had begun playing and the sport was growing in popularity, with Hinckley, Market Harborough, Loughborough and Lutterworth still playing today. By 1900 there were 14 member clubs and in 1920 the LRU became a constituent body of the English Rugby Union. Following the first world war, the growth of the junior rugby clubs began and even through the second world war players continued to keep the sport alive with travelling servicemen playing for the Leicestershire Harlequins. Post war saw the the playing strip change from the Tigers red, white and green that we are all so familiar with, to a maroon jersey with the Leicestershire fox, the logo we still use today. Leicestershire were at the forefront of junior rugby and with their involvement in schools, they led the way with the RFU in creating a structure for boys aged under 13 years. Today the LRU has 32 member clubs and can boast not only high class amateur clubs, but one premiership club, one national level 1 team and 3 national level 2 teams. We have a rich history of rugby with 7 Tigers players playing for the winning 2003 Rugby World Cup team. Many local players have gone on to play on the international platform.

Here in Leicestershire and Rutland we have the strapline "Strong Heritage, Strong Future".
Just take a look at these superb caps, trophies and members handbooks from as far back as 1890. Wow!

The funeral of Richard Green is to be held at South Leicestershire Crematorium at 1pm on Friday 25th September 2026. Address is Foston Road, Countesthorpe, Leicester, LE8 5QP.
Everyone is warmly welcome to join the family for refreshments afterwards at South Leicester Rugby Club, Welford Road, Wigston, Leicester, LE18 3TE.
Richard has requested that there are no flowers,however donations to Loros and Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis would be greatly received.

It is with great sadness that Leicestershire Rugby Union has learnt that Richard Green passed away peacefully on Thursday 27th August.
Richard was a member of Leicestershire Rugby Union from 1993 until 2015 during which he held the posts of Assistant Hon. Secretary for four years, Hon. Secretary for eighteen years and finally as President.
He had been a player for 25 years with South Wigston RFC until he hung his boots up in 1990. He had been a Vice President at South Leicester RFC since the early 1990’s and joined their Committee and Board of Directors in 2015 as Club and Company Secretary.
Richard leaves a wife and two sons, David and Stephen and will be greatly missed by the Rugby Community in Leicestershire.
Funeral arrangements will follow in due course.
