Leicestershire Rugby Union Leicestershire Rugby Union - supporting clubs and teams playing Rugby Union across the county. The LRU supports local rugby right through from 6 to 60+ years!

Established in 1887, the Leicestershire Rugby Union (LRU) has a rich history of rugby. The union was created after a number of local clubs had begun playing and the sport was growing in popularity, with Hinckley, Market Harborough, Loughborough and Lutterworth still playing today. By 1900 there were 14 member clubs and in 1920 the LRU became a constituent body of the English Rugby Union. Following

the first world war, the growth of the junior rugby clubs began and even through the second world war players continued to keep the sport alive with travelling servicemen playing for the Leicestershire Harlequins. Post war saw the the playing strip change from the Tigers red, white and green that we are all so familiar with, to a maroon jersey with the Leicestershire fox, the logo we still use today. Leicestershire were at the forefront of junior rugby and with their involvement in schools, they led the way with the RFU in creating a structure for boys aged under 13 years. Today the LRU has 32 member clubs and can boast not only high class amateur clubs, but one premiership club, one national level 1 team and 3 national level 2 teams. We have a rich history of rugby with 7 Tigers players playing for the winning 2003 Rugby World Cup team. Many local players have gone on to play on the international platform.

What a game today for our senior men in the semi-final away to Essex Rugby.
They came away with the win 28-42, but the game wasnt without excitement and challenges.
With a kit clash, the referee requested the away team (us) had a change of kit. Whilst a kit was offered by the host club (Harlow), the players chose to reverse their own kit and play in white.
In the first half the teams were evenly matched but in the second half, Leicestershire pulled away to lead and finish with the win with just 12 men on the pitch at one point!
Next week we make our way to the final at Twickenham on Sunday 7th June KO 11am against Hampshire Rugby Football Union
More details will follow along, with squad selection, later this week.
Thank you to those who travelled to support the team today including one of our sponsors Designer Travel by Sarah Chapman

**County Championship Update from Marc Birr, DoR**

Leicestershire Women have narrowly missed out on the semi-finals this year. The squad gave everything against Oxfordshire in an effort to secure a semi-final place but it was not to be. Thank to all the Players, coaches and administrators for all your hard work.

The Men’s team have qualified for the semi-finals for another year, following convincing victories over Warwickshire and NLD to take maximum points in the pool stage. They now face Essex at Harlow RFC on Saturday 30th May, 3pm KO, for a place in the Final at Twickenham on 7th June. The other semi-final is between Hampshire and Oxfordshire. Squad will be announced later this week!

Leicestershire U17s brought their campaign to a close yesterday at Mk Bosworth, falling to Gloucestershire 45-36 in a hard-fought contest played in challenging weather conditions.

Despite the defeat, it was an impressive campaign overall for Leicestershire, with strong representation from the Club Colts squad throughout the CB.

Attention now turns to the coaches, who face the challenging task of selecting the U18s squad ahead of the Midland and England Counties pathway.

A huge thank you to all the players, coaches and parents for their dedication and support throughout the season.

☀️Yesterday on a scorching hot day, Leicestershire Women played away to Oxfordshire Rugby Football Union at Abingdon RFC.
The women were playing for a place in the semi-final and both teams played their hearts out! 🩷💛❤️
The game was called to an early end when unfortunately an Oxfordshire player sustained an injury. We wish the player a speedy recovery. 🤕
Final score was 0-64!!!!
🔥Massive well done in crazy heat. We will find out in the next few days if they have enough points to get through to the next round and if so, who they will be playing - watch this space!!

Please note the KO is 2pm not 2.30 as previously advertised. Apologies.
