We’ve been making theatre, music and dance for over 20 years. Some of it has been big and spectacular. Some of it has been intimate and experimental. We’ve taken our work to theatres, festivals and communities across the country, and met some wonderful people along the way.
One thing we’ve learnt is asking people what do they want to see, how do they want to be represented, or what part of our culture do we want to celebrate?
When we were developing Diwali Story, we went out and asked people what they wanted the Ramayana to teach us today. What did this ancient story mean to them? What should a new generation take from it? Those conversations helped shape the production we eventually brought to the stage.
It’s how we like to work. We talk to people, listen to their experiences, question our own assumptions and sometimes discover that the story we thought we were going to tell isn’t quite the story that needs telling.
And we’d like to have more of those conversations.
