Saturday's match report by Alan Houghton. π
On EFL D-day, we all marched down to the Toughsheet to see the Wanderers take on the Hatters from Luton Town. The Doombar deliberations were about our preferred route to the final and beyond, as we had already secured our Play-off spot. Today would sort out who we would have to face and when. Luton were fighting for a Play-off spot themselves under former Wanderers favourite, Jack Wilshere.
The team news was eagerly awaited, in front of another bumper crowd and when it came, Stephen Schumacher had brought back Jordi Osei-Tutu after suspension and rested George Johnston in favour of Max Conway. It was certainly a very attacking team.
What followed probably epitomised our season in one match. Scintillating attacking football, lousy defending, dubious refereeing and a scoreline that could have been anything by the end. Their opening goal was a debatable penalty, which appeared to be touched twice and should have been disallowed. The fightback wasn't long in coming as Jordi Osei-Tutu brought us level and in-form Ibrahim Cissoko put us in front, right on half-time.
Bradford and Stockport were also winning and Stevenage were drawing at half-time, so it wasn't looking good for Luton and we were facing a trip to Stevenage next Saturday afternoon.
But in an end-to-end second half, Luton drew level around about the hour mark, then snatched the winner in added time, and still had time to miss a second penalty. A crazy ending to a match that we should have closed down. In the end, the win was not good enough for Luton as all the other Play-off contenders did their business and won.
So, we are left facing Bradford City at home next Saturday evening, before the return leg at Valley Parade the following Thursday evening. It really doesn't matter who we play or when. We all start level in the Play-offs. We need three good performances now from the Wanderers, with chances taken and tighter defence. We can go into the Play-offs with confidence as several of our players have been coming into form, as they get up to speed. Attack will be our best form of defence. There is no holding back in Play-off matches. We are all in this together. The fans will be up for it. The manager will be up for it. The team must be up for it. Belief is everything now. Come on you Whites.
