Scottish Smallholding & Countryside Festival ⁠The Biggest Small Farming Show in the Country! 🚜 Saturday 17th October 2026 at the Royal Highland Centre. Tickets & info: festival.scot⁠

The Festival is held at the Royal Highland Centre, EH28 8NB. Opening hours for the public are 9.00am to 4.00pm. Supported by the Scottish Government, the event includes livestock (sheep, goats, cattle, pigs, alpacas), and equine shows and showcases; a rural skills area with a Garden, Craft and Food competition, demonstrations and workshops; a trade hall and local food and a programme of talks, discussions and demonstrations, supporting the Festival's aims to "inform, educate and inspire". 🐖 HOME TO SCOTLAND’S ONLY DEDICATED PIG SHOW

Did you know, the Scottish Smallholding & Countryside festival is home to Scotland’s only dedicated pig show and it’s happening in a little over a month’s time at Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston!

Here’s our fabulous pig steward Alan to tell you a bit about what to expect at the show!

Meet the Team: Anne, Our Chief Bean Counter! ✨

Behind every prize-winning pig and buzzing exhibition hall, there’s an unsung hero quietly making sure the numbers all add up and the admin is in place!

Meet Anne, our dedicated Treasurer and the brilliant mind keeping the festival ticking away seamlessly behind the scenes!

We pinned Anne down between spreadsheets to ask a few questions:

❓How did you first get involved in the festival?
"I joined a local smallholding group when I moved here from Aberdeenshire from a small farm with my late husband. I was then was asked to be treasurer, and from there graduated to Smallholding Scotland and the festival!"

❓What’s your role on the committee?
"I look after finances and administration."
(A very humble response from Anne, she really does keep our show on the road!)

❓What’s your favourite part of festival day?
"Seeing everyone coming in the door smiling in anticipation of the day ahead."

❓Your top tip for visitors to the festival?
"Find time to see as much as you can on the day. I never seem to be able to do that!"

Events like ours simply couldn’t happen without the tireless dedication of volunteers like Anne working year-round behind the scenes.

We are pleased to announce the return of the "Big Issue" Session at this year’s Scottish Smallholding & Countryside Festival on Saturday 17th October 2026 at the Royal Highland Centre, run in conjunction with the The James Hutton Institute.

Titled "The Threat Without," this crucial session focuses on the real biosecurity pressures facing Scotland, practical steps to protect your holding, and ensuring the smallholding community has a direct voice in national disease preparedness.

Expect an informed session, with interactive research and an expert panel discussion, chaired by our Festival Ambassador Wallace Currie or Rural2Kitchen.

It’s scheduled for 3:00 PM, right after competitive showing classes finish, so competitors, keepers, and visitors alike can all attend.

Meet the Stewards: Nicki, Our Sheep Section Steward! 🐑✨

Our festival wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful team of volunteer stewards who keep our show rings running smoothly and support our exhibitors on the day.

Kicking off our Meet the Stewards series, meet Nicki! Based in Menmuir, Angus, Nicki’s household keeps Ryeland and Oxford Down sheep (managed by her other half, Grant) alongside a small flock of call ducks. Grant has had a cracking run at local shows this summer and is bringing some of this year's lambs to our festival to close out the showing season!

We caught up with Nicki to get the inside scoop on show day in the sheep lines:

❓What’s the one item in your show-day toolkit you couldn’t survive without in the pens?
"Would not be without a slicker brush for last-minute fluffing up and getting rid of all the 'bits' that sheep seem determined to get covered in right before going into the show ring!"

❓What’s the funniest or most memorable moment you’ve witnessed while stewarding a sheep class?
"A ewe lamb that just lay down in the show ring and refused to get up! The poor lady was left standing there with a sleeping lamb on the end of a halter! 😆"

❓For a smallholder who’s never shown sheep before, what’s your top tip for stepping into the ring?
"Remember that the judge and stewards want everyone to enjoy the experience of showing over and above everything else! A bit of healthy competition is great, but everyone is there because they just love sheep 🐑"
