You might be fit enough… but are you open water skilled?

A lot of swimmers and triathletes train hard in the pool, then get into open water and wonder why everything suddenly feels harder.

They swim off course.
They lift their head too high to sight.
They lose rhythm around buoys.
They breathe only to one side.
They miss drafting opportunities.
They waste energy without realising it.

That’s because open water swimming is not just pool swimming without walls.

We’re running Open Water Skills Training sessions at Compton Verney for swimmers who already swim front crawl and want to become more effective and efficient in open water.

We’ll cover:

Sighting
Swimming in a straighter line
What to sight on and how often to check
Turning around buoys
Drafting on feet, at the side and in arrow formation
Bilateral breathing
Adapting your stroke for open water conditions

This is not a learn-to-swim session and it’s not aimed at complete beginners. It’s for people who can already swim front crawl and want to improve their open water skills.

Upcoming dates:

24th May
7th June
28th June

The session lasts around 60 minutes and costs £30.

If you’ve got a race in mind, this is worth 5 minutes of your time.

𝗡𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Good. That probably means you’re normal.

Lots of people are perfectly capable of swimming in a pool, but the moment they get into open water everything feels different.

The cold water.
Not seeing the bottom.
No wall to hold onto.
No black line to follow.
Breathing feeling rushed.
Other swimmers nearby.

That’s exactly why we run our Introduction to Open Water Swimming sessions at Compton Verney.

This is not a hard fitness session. It’s a calm, coached confidence session for people who are new to open water or feel nervous about it.

We cover:

Safe entry
Relaxed breathing
Floating for safety
Breathing technique
Short swims
Getting used to the lake environment
Understanding how open water swimming works at Compton Verney

You won’t be thrown in at the deep end. You won’t be expected to swim huge distances. And you won’t be made to do anything you’re not ready for.

Upcoming dates:

10th May
17th May
31st May
14th June
21st June

The session lasts around 60 minutes and costs £30.

Fully coached with safety spotters, lifeguard support and rescue kayak cover.
