IT’S ABOUT TIME

London-based, award-winning, international duo Flutes & Frets present intimate, magnetic performances with an array of instruments that enable them to express the colours, gesture and emotions of repertoire from the medieval era through to contemporary. Performing works on flutes and fretted instruments, they explore a variety of music from the past 500 years, featuring compositions by John Dowland, JS Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Chick Corea. Known for their onstage chemistry and interaction, they cultivate a special sound-world taking audiences on a journey through time.

The internationally acclaimed cellist Guy Johnston is this year’s guest artist in residence. Guy will be performing at 3 very special festival events, and we are delighted to have him on board!

This year Guy is also performing at another very special Festival - the BBC Proms!

Join Guy along with our fabulous resident pianist and artistic director Brenda Blewett for ‘Beyond Words’ on Friday 10th July…

The cello is often regarded as the closest imitation of the human voice with its warmth and depth of sound. In this programme Guy and Brenda perform music which was important to them in the early years of their collaboration, exploring how the cello expresses emotion ‘beyond words’.

Make an evening of it and enjoy prosecco and nibbles in the Church Garden from 7.00pm!

On The Nature Of Daylight

6pm
Thursday 9th July
Letheringsett Church
NR25 7YA

The Festival’s resident string quartet Chaos Collective return to the atmospheric setting of Letheringsett Church with their signature eclectic style. From the exciting flair of Piazzolla’s Tango for Four to the soul-stirring beauty of Webern’s Langsamer Satz, from the joyful exuberance of Mozart’s String Quartet No.14 to the rustic buoyancy of Danish Folk Songs, this concert journeys through a realm of string music to delight, enchant and thrill.

Sip a cocktail as daylight gently shifts to evening and let the transcendent music of Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight” (used in the film Arrival) transport you to another world.

Our fabulous opening concert takes place on Wednesday 8th July at 7.30pm in the beautiful setting of Wiveton’s historic church.

Guy Johnston is one of the most exciting British cellists of his generation. We are thrilled to welcome him as our 2026 featured artist. He opens the Festival with the timeless architecture, grandeur and intimate reflection of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites, contrasting with Benjamin Britten’s Cello Suites - spare, searching and deeply expressive. Britten was inspired to write his own Cello Suites by Rostropovich's playing of the Bach Suites so this is a wonderful opportunity to hear both alongside each other.

Chaos Collective join Guy for the second half of this concert in the sumptuous sound world of Brahms’s G major String Sextet.

FIVE CHURCHES FESTIVAL 2026 8 -12 JULY
The Five Churches Festival returns for its fourth year!
Featured artist for 2026 is international cellist Guy Johnston, bringing to Norfolk his current UK tour of Bach and Britten Cello Suites as well as appearing in recital with Festival Artistic Director Brenda Blewett and resident string quartet, Chaos Collective.

The big Festival highlight promises to be a spectacular evening given by Classical Brit Award winners, Blake in the magical setting of Bayfield Hall. Expect rousing music, popping corks and all in the setting of one of Norfolk’s most beautiful estates.
Also hear award-winning young musicians in concert, and acclaimed duo ‘Flutes and Frets’ in atmospheric Glandford Church.
Witness a family concert with live illustration by James Mayhew or hear Schubert’s haunting tale of The Fair Maid of the Mill, sung by Julian Godlee, in collaboration with Letheringsett Mill. Chaos Collective give a Cocktail Concert, and Cley Church becomes a jazz café for a night.
