One year ago to the day, eight military crews raced for the first time on the Henley Royal Regatta course in the Qualifying Races. They were honouring the past, celebrating former foes now allies, and championing women in sport and in the military. In 1919 the Royal Henley Peace Regatta took place in the middle of a global pandemic. One hundred years later the King’s Cup continues on its world tour but for now remains in quarantine in Australia.

Congratulations! Australian Defence Force King’s Cup Team Manager, Brigadier Alison Creagh CSC AM (Ret’d) has been honoured in the Australian Queen’s Birthday Honours list with appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to veterans and their families, and to rowing.

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. An AM is awarded to individuals for service in a particular locality, or field of activity, or to a particular group.

The photo shows Alison marshalling at the Finals Day parade of The King’s Cup. The King’s Cup was handed over at Leander Club by the Club’s oldest veteran to Guardsmen of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. The regiment had raced in 1919 and they escorted the Cup into the Steward’s Enclosure through an honour guard of the crews competing in 2019. Alison helped ensure that the event was seamless as the Cup was handed over to the next generation flanked by the traditional escorts of Henley Prizes, the Doggett's Coat and Badge winners

Alison retired in March 2015 after a 30-year career, spending much of her career as an officer in the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. She served on operations in Cambodia, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan

As an Army Reservist, Alison managed the Australian Defence Force King’s Cup crew and was a key contributor to everything that made The King’s Cup so special. Alison remains a champion of defence/military rowing.

Australian Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), who has been an outstanding supporter of both military rowing and The King’s Cup, said

“This list recognises a group of outstanding Australians who have made a contribution to their community, to Australia globally or domestically. Their efforts have been noted by their peers, they’ve been nominated and assessed independently as worthy of recognition.”

Well done Alison Creagh!

Congratulations to the class of 2020 Navy crew who graduated last week from the United States Naval Academy. COVID 19 meant it was all a little different. But there had been an opportunity to congratulate them just before they were sent home. Before spring break The King’s Cup arrived in the United States Naval College to help celebrate the victory at Henley Royal Regatta last year. Chris Hartley was escorted over the pond by US Defence Attaché Admiral Manaro and brought twelve bottles of vintage cognac to finish an extraordinary dinner in the company of Admirals, Marine Generals, former Chief of Navy Operations, and Henley Royal Regatta Stewards. The crew were presented with their medals engraved with their names, and appropriately feted by RADM Pat Piercey.
Congratulations to all and especially to Ashlyn Dawson (going on to Surface Warfare) and Jacob Klosowski (going deep into the silent service) who were both in the King’s Cup crew. Your names are already in the history books and as VADM Bill Merz, Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, who watched you race that day , said to all 2020 USNA graduates: “Look ahead and seize it - play hard”

April 25th is ANZAC DAY. It marks the date of the first landings in Gallipoli in 1915, and it remembers those Australians and New Zealanders who served and sacrificed in all wars. This year the normal Anzac dawn services have been cancelled but the last post ceremony in Canberra will remember Private Thomas Anderson Whyte of the 10th Battalion AIF, one of the oarsman who volunteered to row troops to the beach in 1915. Standing upright in his boat, being sprayed by enemy gunfire, he paid the ultimate price.
Amongst those who survived Gallipoli and then the Western Front were crew members who went on to race for The King’s Cup in 1919.
The King’s Cup below is next to the commemorative plaque at the Sydney International Regatta Centre which is dedicated to the Australian Imperial Force oarsmen who won The King’s Cup in 1919 at the Royal Henley Peace Regatta.
