ORGANISER INTRO πŸ’› DRINKS ANNOUNCEMENTS SOON πŸ‘€

This is a quick post to introduce you to your festival organisers!

Hemel Old Town Beer Festival is a not-for-profit community event, co-organised by St Marys Church and the Mid-Chilterns CAMRA (with assistance from Hemel Hempstead Old Town Market, thanks guys πŸ’›).

St. Mary’s Church is thought to be Hemel Hempstead’s oldest building, built in 1140 and today Grade-I listed.

Since records began St. Mary’s has been the at the heart of community life, and even used to sell beer to members of the public in ancient times, as was convention.

Today, St. Mary’s is headed up by Reverend Canon John Williams, who takes a guiding role in our beer festival committee, along with church bellringer and treasurer Brian.

St Mary’s Church is still central to modern life in Hemel’s historic old town, with markets, bike shows, drum groups, art galleries and so much more being hosted at the grand building and within its picturesque grounds.

The church is a registered charity, and is proud to help many local affiliated causes, including nearby charities and social enterprises.

We hope that you have enjoyed this introduction to a portion of the festival team, we’re excited to reveal our drinks line-up and talk about our co-organisers, CAMRA, in posts planned very soon. πŸ˜„

Introducing your Sunday guest speaker at Hemel Old Town Beer Festival, Bishop Rob Wickham.

Opening our final session on July 19th, Bishop Rob is the CEO of The Church Urban Fund.

In 2015, Rob was made Bishop of Edmonton in north London, becoming the country’s youngest bishop at only 43.

Prior to his consecration as bishop, then-Fr Rob oversaw an expansion of community programmes at St John’s in Hackney, including the installation of a knife amnesty bin, which became the most-used in the capital. β›ͺ

In 2012, Rob was commended for β€˜outstanding community building’ by the Speaker of Hackney Council. What a pleasure and a privilege to be joined by Bishop Rob, a self-confessed ale lover no less!

In what has now become a festival tradition, the Bishop will bless the casks at St. Mary’s in the early-afternoon, echoing the sentiments of St. Arnold, the Patron Saint of Beer.

Our popular Family Day returns, commencing midday Sunday 19th.

Following the incredible response to our first Family Day in 2024 and then again last year, we’re thrilled to be rolling out the garden furniture and opening the church hall for families and dog-walkers once more. Make a day of your Sunday visit to Gadebridge Park. πŸŽͺ

Children & under-18s are welcome free-of-charge, with festivities on until 6pm.
