Dr Michelle Hills - The Wrong Order of Things

Dr Michelle Hills, Chief Medical Officer at Martin’s House Children’s Hospice in Yorkshire, describes in her book, The Wrong Order of Things, the realities of caring for children with complex, generally life-ending, medical conditions. She works together with families to try to find a way through illness and make their children’s lives, however short, the best and happiest they can be.

National Theatre Live - The Misanthrope

Award-winner Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) plays the title role in this razor-sharp reimagining of Molière’s classic dark comedy.

Telling the truth isn’t always that simple. Alice, a brilliant novelist, despises the carefully constructed lies of modern society. But the more she challenges those around her, the fiercer the backlash becomes. Soon, she must confront the price of speaking her truth in a world that would rather silence her.

Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Indhu Rubasingham directs Martin Crimp’s (Cyrano de Bergerac) highly anticipated play.

Life-Changing Lessons for Coping with Crisis - Sun 20 September, 2.30pm

When a disaster happens, who picks up the pieces? The answer is Lucy Easthope or one of her colleagues in the field of Disaster Management. Her books, When the Dust Settles: Stories of Love, Loss and Hope from an Expert in Disaster and The Recovery Myth: The Plans and Situated Realities of Post-Disaster Response, shook up people’s perceptions of what is needed after a disaster happens. She was a guest on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in June 2025.

We can't wait to welcome the wonderful Rukky Brume to HAC for Helmsley Literary Festival on Sun 20 September, 12.30pm!

Rukky Brume grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. Her ‘breathtaking’ debut novel, It Comes in Waves, featured on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Wednesday 24th June 2026, follows Onome, a law student in London, whose father dies suddenly in Nigeria. Returning home for his funeral, she learns an aspect of his life she never knew.

BATTY! Is an alternative coming of age story. A story of a woman who fears she might be a witch. An ordinary woman stuck with an extraordinary shapeshifting companion, a wild thing. This curious twosome are in a disintegrating cottage in a forest on the cusp of another world that lies beyond responsibilities and social norms, and where myths and magic are real.
