In 2019 to celebrate the pool's 50th anniversary, we held our first Triathlon and SwimRun.

We wanted to build upon our popular Aquathlon series and share our beautiful National Park location -with all proceeds going towards the pool.

6 weeks to go!

Lovely to see lots of familiar faces at the inaugural Pedal, Pie & Pint event at The Plough Community Pub. Fadmoor although we don’t think there will be a big clamour to include the Blakely Bank climb in our tri bike route. Big thank you for a wonderful event - hope it becomes an annual event.

Co-organiser Julie was very pleased to get her post ride pint 🍺 served to her by Jon Richardson - so along with the Tri moving to chip timing this year - she is winning at life.

A couple of dates for the diary - our 5 day week swim timetable until half term offers Thursday evening lane swimming & sauna amongst other lane swims, whilst the all important St Nicholas Church tea & cake dates are here too.

Lots of updates for you - the main one being The Pool has REOPENED. With our races now earlier in the year -June 20th - we thought we’d better open in April so you can get some training in! See pool timetable here https://www.helmsleyopenairpool.org/

Helmsley 10K - it was great to see many of you on Easter Day doing the run. With the pool hosting the event, a record turnout and around £3500 raised for both the Lido and the Samaritans - thank you to everyone involved.

It has been a busy pre season with a complete overhaul of the building’s plumbing system, which will provide more hot water and better pressure for the all important pre & post shower swim.

We are working with an architect to extend & reconfigure the 57 year old pool building to make it fit for the 21st Century- the first phase of this has been to double the size of the gents toilets.

With your cycle and run prep sorted with the The Plough Community Pub. Fadmoor sportive and the Helmsley Run - great news on the swimming front. Some of you will recognise Becki BK Swimming Coach who has volunteered at the triathlon since we started in 2019. Becki is running training sessions specifically aimed at triathletes looking to improve their front crawl technique- so if you are in striking distance of Pickering Pool Ryedale Swim & Fitness Centre - get yourself booked on!

A fab opportunity to recce the cycle route 9th May- the Bransdale Loop. You maybe following the efforts of The Plough Community Pub. Fadmoor on All4 to bring back the lovely pub we cycle past into use. To raise £ for this they are holding a Sportive with 3 routes on offer - the short one is our route but cycled in the equally beautiful clockwise direction with a medium and long route offer a great work out and further exploration of the National Park - for more details and to enter https://theploughfadmoor.co.uk/events/pedal-pie-pint-cycle-sportive/ Don't tell anyone but there's just a chance you'll be able to pop in for a restorative swim & sauna on the way home

For our last post in 2025 we want to celebrate the absolute legends of our Triathlon. Their 4 combined ages total 263 and we can think of no other athletes who inspire us more. John and Martin were triathlon 'returners' in 2025, whilst Kevern stepped up from our SwimRun from the year before - all are in the 65-69 age category and all 3 finished a little either side of the 3.5 hour mark. I did my first triathlon as a twentysomething at Perranporth in 2001, before then I hadn't associated white chest hair with being a supreme athlete - but that all changed back then. Unlike single discipline events - these guys age like fine wine, there really is something about multisport events that make you happy, healthy & youthful. Then there is Julia in the 60-64 age category. Julia's 4th Helmsley Triathlon, having done the first one in 2019. Her time was an incredible 3h 12mins and as you can see from the photos, Julia has the biggest smile of everyone. 2 days to go to enter at a discounted rate. Despite the challenging cycle ride, the event attracts a lot of first time triathletes & SwimRunners - so if you are looking for a friendly and scenic setting (& warm swim) for your first multisport event - we could be for you. For those of you looking for a podium finish - here are our 2025 podium finishers - Josie got the fastest ever ladies time of 2hrs 22 mins with Matthew coming home in 2hrs 15 mins. In the SwimRun David got our 2nd fastest time ever 52:41 and Ellen won in one hour & 40 seconds. They were joined on their respective podiums by Sarah, Charlotte, James, Dave Jack, Patrick, Olivia & Gill - well done all. We will be celebrating our 'more seasoned' competitors tomorrow and with chip timing for the first time ever in 2026 - results will be live and there will be more of a focus on celebrating the various age categories - for more information and to enter https://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/helmsley-triathlon-%26-swimrun-2026_17053

Just 4 days to go until our 'Early Bird' offer closes -Triathlon for £63 and the SwimRun for £25.90. Here are the cycle and run routes. With transition being moved to directly above the pool compound rather than in it - we will have more space poolside & will be moving the finish line back into the pool compound, so (after a quick shower) you can celebrate crossing the finish line with a jump into the pool & or a sauna. Family & friends are a big part of the day - so they will also be allowed a free swim 11am-1pm whilst the race is on. Finally we have noticed more and more dogs cheering their owners on in past few years. Dogs are NOT allowed on the sportsfield, however we will allow well behaved dogs on leads within the pool compound (but not in the pool) on race day. The last leg of both the Triathlon & The SwimRun is the 10Km run (clockwise). In 2010 the Easter Day Helmsley Run was launched - a multi-terrain route taking in more of the beautiful scenery of the National Park. The 10km Run event is Easter Sunday 5th April 2026 - more information here https://racebest.com/races/9vrr5 So when we launched our multisport events in 2019 the route of this established fabulous 10Km was already there. It is a tough 4Km Climb North up through the village of Carlton (back where you may have just cycled from), then turning onto tracks originally built as part of the area's tank training role in WW2, before running high above the uninhabited stunning valley of Riccaldale, finally turning back towards Helmsley - it's historic Castle right ahead. There are 2 water stations enroute with one first aid station and Km markers.
