โ€œI DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN COMPETITIONS!โ€

Speech to Parents โ€“ โ€œWhat Kind of Children Do We Want to Raise?โ€

Dear Parents,

Today I am not speaking only as a coach.
I am speaking as someone who has practiced karate for a few decades and has seen entire generations grow up on the tatami.

I want to ask you a simple question:

What kind of children do we want to raise?

Children protected from every strong emotion?
Or children who know how to manage their fear?

Children shielded from failure?
Or children who learn how to fall and get back up?

Because this is what itโ€™s really about.

Karate is not just an after-school activity.
It is not just movement.
It is not just a uniform and a colored belt.

Karate is the moment when a child stands alone in front of an opponent.
Alone with their emotions.
Alone with their fear.
Alone with their hard work.

And it is precisely that moment that shapes them.

In recent years I have heard more and more often:
โ€œHeโ€™s not participating, he has school.โ€
โ€œSheโ€™s not participating, she has exams.โ€
โ€œHeโ€™s not participating, heโ€™s not ready.โ€

Let me tell you something honestly:
A child will never be โ€œready enoughโ€ if we teach them to avoid the test.

Competition does not destroy a child.
Indifference and overprotection can weaken one.

I know you are afraid.
Afraid of injury.
Afraid of failure.
Afraid of disappointment.

But allow me to tell you an uncomfortable truth:

Most of the time, it is not the child who is afraid.
It is the adult.

And the child learns fear from our reaction.

On the tatami, we do not create champions overnight.
We build character.

There, a child learns:
โ€“ to control their emotions
โ€“ to accept defeat
โ€“ to respect the opponent
โ€“ to take responsibility for a result

These lessons are not learned from theory.
They are learned by living through them.

If we remove competition, karate becomes just physical exercise.
And I cannot reduce this art to that.

A belt is not a prize for attendance.
It is not a diploma for loyalty.
It is proof of a journey taken with commitment.

Therefore, promotion will be conditioned by participation in competitions.

It is not a punishment.
It is a standard.

Because I cannot teach courage while accepting avoidance.
I cannot speak about character while rewarding comfort.

In the end, I leave you with one question:

When your child faces their first serious confrontation in life, a difficult exam, a job interview, an injustice, a failure, will they know how to face itโ€ฆor will they instinctively look to avoid it?

On the tatami, they have the chance to learn this safely.
Under supervision.
With clear rules.

I choose to teach them to fight.
You decide whether we allow them to.

With respect,
Sensei ๐Ÿฅ‹ Oss!

First of all, we would like to sincerely thank everyone for your support, trust, and participation. The level of interest in this competition truly exceeded our expectations, and we are grateful to every club, coach, athlete, parent, referee, and volunteer who was part of this event.

We were honoured to welcome 70 clubs, with 1,058 entries and 574 competitors, representing England ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, Romania ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ด, Scotland ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ, Nepal ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ต, India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ, the Netherlands ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ, Denmark ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ, Pakistan ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ, Algeria ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ and Wales ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ.

We were also privileged to host 11 international referees from Romania ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ด, Malta ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น, Slovakia ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐ, and Hungary ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡บ, working alongside our officials from England.

๐Ÿ™ Special thanks to our incredible Staff, Judges, Referees (with appreciation to Chief Referee Sensei Kourosh Lotfi), Medical Team, and Security Officers for your professionalism and dedication throughout the day.

๐Ÿ‘ Outstanding performances from our top clubs:
๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿ† Elite Karate Club London
๐Ÿฅˆ๐Ÿ† Sport Karate Academy
๐Ÿฅ‰๐Ÿ† Pro-Karate Academy

๐Ÿ… And congratulations to all competitors, your hard work, discipline, and fighting spirit are what truly make this event special.

As many of you know, our original entry limit was 700 competitors. Due to the overwhelming demand and many requests from clubs and coaches, the competition grew to 1,058 entries. While this level of trust means a great deal to us, accepting entries beyond our planned capacity placed us in a very difficult situation on the day.
For this, we would like to offer our sincere apologies to the athletes, parents, coaches, referees, and clubs. We acknowledge that the competition did not run as smoothly as planned, with delays, waiting times, limited space, and pressure on facilities. We fully understand the frustration this caused.

As the organising team, we take full responsibility. The sports hall was not sufficient for the number of competitors, spectators, and officials present. This experience has been challenging for everyone involved, organisers, staff, referees, athletes, and parents, and we genuinely apologise.

Since 2014โ€“2015, we have been organising competitions and continuously learning from both good and difficult experiences.
We started at YMCA Walthamstow with 3 areas, then moved to SportsDock, then to Harlow, always adapting and improving after each event.

After last Elite Open, we secured K2 Crawley, a spacious venue where we successfully run our Elite Open Grand Prix in October across 8 areas.

Following this event, we are now seriously reflecting on relocating the June competition to a larger venue if a suitable option becomes available in time. If not, we will implement strict solutions to ensure that what happened this time does not happen again.

From now on, entry limits will be non-negotiable.

We are fully aware of what must improve, staffing levels, tatami management, scheduling, and crowd control, and all feedback, especially critical feedback, will be carefully reviewed and used to raise the quality of future events. We are moving forward, not backward.

Organising events of this scale is never easy. Many of us have attended competitions that have run late into the night, sometimes until midnight or beyond (abroad). That does not remove responsibility from us, but it reminds us that every organiser learns through experience.

We also wish to mention that during the event, we experienced significant pressure from the leisure centre management, including repeated demands to finish early before our finishing time, lights being switched off twice without warning, and announcements instructing people to leave before the competition had concluded. This added unnecessary tension, and a formal complaint has been submitted regarding this matter.

Despite the challenges, our intention has always been clear: to deliver high-quality, fair, and professional karate competitions, with strong refereeing standards and international participation.

Once again, thank you for your support, patience, and understanding. We remain committed to learning from this experience and delivering better, stronger, and more organised events in the future.

Since Monday, there have been several changes. To make things easier for everyone, please note that the most up-to-date draws and timetable will always be available directly on Sportdata, rather than in the downloads section.

๐Ÿ“Œ Important:

The final version of the draws and timetable will be uploaded for download on Friday before midnight.

Until then, any updates will appear almost immediately on Sportdata, so please refer to the website for the latest information.

โ„น๏ธ On our side, the system operates both online and offline. Every change requires syncing systems, removing and recreating draws, updating records, and re-uploading documents. It is a complex process, but we are doing our best to accommodate changes so that no athletes are affected.

๐Ÿ”” Please remember: any category change carries a ยฃ30 fee per category, as per our policy.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.
We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday!

Hi everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹

As a reminder, entries will close tonight at midnight. Unfortunately, there will be no Phase 2 or Phase 3, as we have already reached nearly 700 confirmed entries, with an additional 199 athletes on the waiting list.

Our main priority as organisers is to ensure the competition runs smoothly, finishes on time, and is an enjoyable experience for everyone, from children and parents, to coaches, referees, and all those involved on the day.

We completely understand that this decision will be disappointing for some of you, and it is never an easy one for us. From the very beginning, the entry limit was clearly set at 700, and with the high volume of messages and phone calls requesting additional places, we find ourselves in a difficult position where we genuinely want to make everyone happy. However, we also ask for your understanding, accepting more entries would compromise the quality and flow of the event.

Please donโ€™t take this as a lack of appreciation. The incredible demand shows the trust you place in our event, and for that we are truly grateful. For future competitions, we strongly encourage early registration to avoid disappointment.
Looking ahead, we are already exploring solutions such as a larger venue or even running the event over two days.

โ€ข June is already confirmed and will follow the same format.
โ€ข October will take place at K2 Crawley, where we will be able to accommodate a minimum of 6โ€“8 areas, allowing for greater capacity.

Thank you once again for your understanding, support, and trust. We are very much looking forward to a successful and memorable tournament on 25th January.
