When people think about home extensions, the conversation often focuses on whether they add monetary value to a property. But value shouldn't always be measured by the final figure on a piece of paper. 🏡

A well-planned extension can improve the way you live in your home and make your property more appealing to future buyers, too. As such, it's worth considering how much an extension can add value to your life by:

• Creating more functional family space.
• Improving natural light and flow throughout the home.
• Adding sought-after features, such as open-plan living or a home office.
• Helping you to stay in a location you already love rather than moving.
• Making the property stand out to buyers when it comes to selling.
• Increasing buyer interest and potentially helping achieve a quicker sale.

Don't forge that in many cases, buyers are not just looking at square footage; they are looking at lifestyle, practicality and how a property feels to live in.

Whether you are planning for the future or preparing a property for sale, taking professional advice before starting any major works can help ensure your investment works as effectively as possible. Get in touch to find out Howe we can help with home extensions, from the architectural design stage through to contract administration, project management and even interior design! 👇

When viewing a property, timing can make a bigger difference than many buyers realise. 🏡

If possible, it’s always worth visiting a property more than once, and ideally on both a weekday and at the weekend. This is because the area, and the house itself, can feel very different depending on the day and time.

📅 A weekday viewing may help you assess:

• Rush hour traffic and parking.
• Noise levels during working hours, particularly if located next to a railway line or a commercial area.
• School run activity.
• Public transport links and commuting times.
• General day-to-day atmosphere.

📆 A weekend viewing can give you a better sense of:

• How busy the neighbourhood is socially.
• Local amenities, cafés and green spaces.
• Evening and weekend noise levels.
• The overall lifestyle and community feel of the area.

First impressions are always important, but a second viewing often helps buyers notice details such as the above that they may have missed initially.

Taking the time to properly understand both the property and its surroundings can help you make a more informed decision in the long run, as can a home buyer survey from a trusted Chartered Surveyor. Get in contact today to find out Howe we can help with property purchase surveys.

Outgrowing your business premises can definitely be a good problem to have, but it’s important to plan ahead before space constraints begin affecting productivity or customer experience.

From limited room for staff growth and storage issues, through to parking constraints and premises that no longer reflect your brand's ambitions, there are lots of reasons that businesses outgrow their space.

However, before making any decisions, it’s worth considering:

🏢 Lease terms and break clauses.
🏢 Future growth plans, rather than simply immediate needs.
🏢 The location requirements of your staff and customers.

Our commercial property team can then work with your business to assess your options and plan for the future, as well as the exciting part: finding new premises that suit your requirements!

Get in contact with us today: we are happy to work with businesses at every stage of growth, to help to find premises and office solutions that fit your needs.

With a long bank holiday weekend ahead, if you're in the market for a new property, it’s the perfect opportunity to start exploring potential areas to call home. 🏡

Whether you’re planning a move this year or simply starting to think about your next step, bank holidays can be a great time for house hunters to:

• Explore different neighbourhoods and see where they'd like to put down roots next.
• Get a feel for local amenities, green spaces and transport links.
• Take a look at what's open nearby on a weekend.
• Compare locations without the usual weekday rush.
• Shortlist properties and plan viewings for the weeks ahead.

Even if estate agents are taking a well-earned break on Monday, many will be open this Saturday for viewings you can still make good use of the extra time by researching areas, reviewing listings and mapping out the places you’d like to visit next.

A little preparation now can make the search process much smoother later on, and don't forget that as part of that, Howe Chartered Surveyors will be able to make the home buyer survey process plain sailing when the time comes.

Enjoy the long weekend ahead, and to those of you looking for your next home, happy house hunting!

As we near the end of Dementia Action Week, we thought we'd share a little more about what individuals and teams can do in support of dementia awareness.

🧠 Keep your mind active: this is something that teams can do in house to support active minds, and indeed something that we do here at HCS every week with our Monday morning team games. Why not organise quizzes, puzzles, memory games, word challenges or team brain-training activities during the week? It's not only a way to keep our minds active, it's also great fun and builds bonds within our team!

🤝 Support colleagues with caring responsibilities: many people balance work alongside caring for loved ones living with dementia. If you know this to be the case within your team and the person in question is open about this, check in with them regularly, be flexible where possible, and foster a supportive environment.

💭 Start conversations: Something we've discovered this week is that Dementia Action Week is a great opportunity to talk openly about dementia and the impact it can have on individuals and families.

💙 Fundraise where possible: maybe a dementia charity could be your company's charity of the year, or you could hold a coffee morning or similar in support?

📚 Share resources and information: taking a leaf out of our own book, below are some trusted resources on recognising the signs of dementia, communication tips, and available support services:

Whilst we have had fun with our team game this week, we hope the important message of supporting those living with dementia, and those caring for loved ones with dementia, shines through, and that this post may help even one of our followers.

To show our support for the Alzheimer's Society's Dementia Action Week, HCS are today swapping their usual red for blue, having decorated our office in blue and with all of our team wearing blue today. 💙

Keeping our brains active is very important to us as a team, too, and so for our Monday morning Team challenge, we played, what we are calling, Cross Off. Each team had a unique sheet with numbers on it and each person had a grid. After deciding who went first with rock, paper, scissors, the player called a number from the sheet then started to fill their own grid with crosses.

When the opponent found the number, they crossed it through and shouted stop. They then called a number and filled their grid whilst the other searched and so it went on until the winner had completed their grid!

It came to a playoff between HCS Heroes and the A Team, with Neil and Josh representing respectively. It was close, but The Heroes took the win.

Afterwards, we had a little discussion after about dementia awareness and how to look out for signs in friends and family, as well as how important it is to keep our brains active with games like today's.

For more information on dementia awareness, take a look at the Alzheimer's Society for advice, support and ideas to get involved:

“The estate agent said it’s nothing…” And sometimes that’s exactly right. But sometimes, it’s worth a closer look, and we would always advise getting a professional survey undertaken before any house purchase.

We’re often instructed to inspect properties where concerns have been discussed in passing as:

“It’s just a hairline crack.”
“It’s probably just cosmetic.”
“That damp patch doesn’t look significant.”

And whilst in many cases, that proves to be correct, on occasion, a more detailed inspection can reveal something that isn’t immediately obvious at first glance, such as early signs of movement, moisture ingress, timber issues or previous alterations that may benefit from further investigation.

When you’re making a major financial decision, having clear, independent professional advice can make all the difference in understanding what you’re really dealing with. A good survey both highlights problems and gives reassurance, which is what you need to make a confident property purchase.

Thinking about a loft conversion? Summer is the ideal time to get started on one! 😎 This is down to a number of reasons, including:

☀️ Better weather: the obvious advantage to having a loft conversion done in the summer months are the longer, drier days that both keep projects moving efficiently and reduce the risk of weather-related delays...and reduce the exposure of your home to the elements!

☔️ Get ahead of inclement weather: Of course, you can never guarantee a glorious Great British summer time, but by starting in summer months it should mean that the main structural work is completed before the colder and wetter months arrive, when having part of your home exposed to the elements is far from ideal.

🏡 Potential to add value ahead of the busy property market: a well-designed loft conversion can add valuable living space and increase market appeal. Completing it ahead of the autumn uplift in property sales or even next year's early spring market will put you ahead of the sale game.

A loft conversion can be one of the most effective ways to maximise space without sacrificing garden area or moving house, and we know Howe to help you plan one with our professional advice. Our complementing services include architectural design, structural engineering, contract administration and project management, among other aspects.
