40-years ago this month 2,000 competitors set-off from Limefitt Caravan Park at Troutbeck in the 2-day ‘Karrimor Mountain Marathon’. Many, including myself, my 3 brothers, my dad, and future sister in law, camped in Boredale (just off Leg 1). It was a typical KIMM, mixed weather, friendly, competitive, challenging….type 2 fun at times, a bit like many fell races are!
The Score class in those ‘pre-electronic’ days (remember those you Over 50’s?) couldn’t be calculated on the day; you had to wait until a couple of days later to find out how many points you had accumulated and how you had done. The winners that year turned out to be our brother Ian and his partner Jem Wilson; sadly, Ian never knew he had won the event as he was killed whilst cycling on the Monday on his way to our mum & dad’s.
The Hodgson relay was first created 40-years ago in memory of Ian and he would have genuinely loved this race, as did our other brother Mike who passed away 10 years ago this year; it’s proper racing, in tough Lakeland conditions, eyeballs out, running with mates in your own club and competing against friends from other clubs at the same time.
We have all missed out on being able to enjoy the competition & camaraderie this year (definitely a good decision btw it’s been truly biblical weather the last 24-hrs), but we shall look forward to welcoming you back in Patterdale in 2026 where you will, at last, receive this year’s relay coaster.
