SOME SAD NEWS

Murdo MacDonald, the founder of the Highland Fling Race passed away recently.

Murdo started the Highland Fling Race in 2006 and directed the race until handing it over to me in 2012. He continued to help and mentor me for many years and always had thoughts on ways to improve the race.

Murdo was also was the driving force behind getting together all the other ultramarathon events in Scotland to create the race the Scottish Ultra Marathon Series (SUMS).

Although not a runner himself, his efforts definitely helped create the very special Scottish ultra running community.

BREAKING NEWS

!!! RETURN OF THE RELAY RACE !!!

We are super excited to be announcing the return of the Highland Fling Relay Race for 2026, in the slightly revised format of a two-person event.

We hope it will be popular with folks just making the jump to long distance trail running, folks returning from injury, folks fairly sure the distance/cutoffs of the full 53 miles are beyond their current capabilities, and really just any runner who wants to experience the friendliness of the Scottish ultra community, the joy of the beautiful race route along the West Highland Way, and of course the satisfaction of running down our famous red carpet to cross the finish line in Tyndrum.

The relay will take place on Saturday 29th August, at the same time as the ultramarathon, and along exactly the same route. Race registration is at the same time and place. Relay runners have access to the same changing and showering facilities, and to the same fabulous hot food and drinks options at the race finish. The vast majority of the information is the same for both events. The compulsory kit is the same, the cut-off times are the same, and the race rules are broadly the same.

ENTRY DETAILS

· 30 team places available
· Teams can be women, men, nonbinary, or mixed
· Team places will be allocated by ballot (pre-selection entry)
· Entries will open at 9:00pm on Sunday 9th November
· No payment is required at time of pre-selection entry
· Entries will close at midnight on Saturday 22nd November
· Successful teams will be announced on Sunday 23rd November
· Invites to accept team places and make payment will follow
· Entry fee: £150 per team

EVENT DETAILS
· Start time: 6:00am for all relay teams
· Leg 1: Milngavie - Rowardennan (27-ish miles)
· Leg 2: Rowardennan - Tyndrum (26-ish miles)
· Drop bag system - one food drop bag per relay leg

AGE RESTRICTIONS
All relay runners must be at least 20 years old (on race day). There is no upper age limit.

ENTRY CRITERIA
There are no specific entry criteria for relay runners. All runners are welcome as long as both team members reasonably expect to make the time-of-day cut-offs.

CUT-OFF TIMES
Leg 1 runner must reasonably expect to reach Rowardennan by 12:45pm (6hrs 45mins)*

Leg 2 runner must leave Rowardennan by 12:45pm, and must meet the following cut-offs:

Inversnaid - 7.3 miles - 2.45pm (time of day)
Beinglas - 13.7 miles - 5.15pm (time of day)
A82 Road Crossing - 22.8miles - 8.15pm (time of day)

*The changeover point at Rowardennan is a 'soft' cut-off. If a team’s first runner has not arrived at Rowardennan by 12:45pm, the second runner may set off anyway, so as to be able to meet the later race cut-offs. In this situation, the team’s recorded finish time in the official race results will be an aggregate of both runners’ individual leg times rather than an overall ‘total race time’ measured from 6:00am.

Full details of the relay event will be available on the race website soon.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do ask here...

There will also be a Loch Lomond Brewery Beer if you are thirsty.
