Broken Colour
Paintings by Huck Sanderson,
soundscape by Honey Beatrice Welch
27th-31st May 2026
Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover

Huck is a Glasgow based artist, who graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 1974.
This exhibition, Broken Colour, is primarily influenced by Huck’s blind dog Piggy and how he sees the world. It is also refers to how she applies paint.
The accompanying soundscape, made in collaboration with Honey Beatrice Welch, is the way that she encourages him to follow her on their daily walks. Piggy sings with joy when he hears the stick bang against a fence, railing, bench or bridge.
The works are created spontaneously and focuses on how paint is applied to various substrates. Canvas or paper are stapled to her studio wall and the conception of an idea is left open; images and forms emerge, often guiding the evolution of the work.

Huck is a Casualist Painter - Casualism is a form of 21st century contemporary art which uses colour, composition and balance to produce works with an unusual rather than obviously appealing appearance. It is at the whim of the artist therefore arriving at a less predictable moment. The works might seem unfinished, incomplete, intentionally awkward. It provides the viewer with phrases rather than sentences. It is sincere and spontaneous without an agenda and if the viewer leaves the show agitated by the abrupt shifts, the work has succeeded.

Honey Beatrice Welch is a multi-disciplinary sonic and performance artist based in Glasgow. She graduated from The University of Glasgow in 2025 with a First Class Honours Degree in Music, specialising in experimental vocal performance, sonic arts and electronics for sound. Since graduating, she has been invited back to the university as a featured performer.

Many thanks go to Fraser Taylor for managing the show and to Gemma Tree of Spouse for photography.

Coming up at the Studio Pavilion…

‘Changing Rooms’ 更衣室
A new collaborative exhibition by Sharon Thomas & Le Liu

Studio Pavilion
5-21 June 2026
Opening: Saturday 6 June
5–9pm (General Viewing)

Developed over 18 months, ‘Changing Rooms’ brings together a new body of work exploring painting across Eastern and Western traditions. Supported by The Hunterian, University of Glasgow, the artists have studied sketchbooks, paintings and Asian ceramics from the estate of James McNeill Whistler, using this research as a starting point to reimagine colour, surface and space.

This one-off collaborative exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience a dual painting practice, as Sharon Thomas and Le Liu create a shared visual dialogue that bridges different artistic traditions.

Running alongside Glasgow International, the exhibition also reflects on the legacy of the Glasgow Style and its connections to Whistler and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Follow for behind-the-scenes insights as we approach the opening.
