Geddington Battle of the Brook

Geddington Battle of the Brook Started in 1957, the Battle of the Brook is a tradition of the village of Geddington, Northamptonshire. Resurected in 2015 the event is going strong!

The Geddington Battle of the Brook

Legend goes that this tradition (started in 1957) arose from a challenge that those who lived on the South side of the river were “of more noble countenance” than those living on the North side. When those of the North disagreed, the obvious response was to invite the South to a tournament of strength - a Tug-O-War - and the Battle of the Brook was born. Origina

lly held over the River Ise, with the losing team pulled through the river, the event went on for a number of years - and each year the crowds that watched grew larger and larger. It is said that the event was finally ended when a police-man’s ear was bitten off during a post-match scuffle! The Battle of the Brook was brought back in 2015 by John Doran (JD), who sadly passed away in 2018. In his honour, the trophy that JD acquired for the winning team has been re-named The John Doran Cup and is presented to the captain of the winning side. The action now takes place in front of the Cricket Club and is held immediately after the Trundle (about 4pm). Team Captains are appointed by the organisers, but anyone wanting to take part are requested to make themselves known to Jack Harker on the day. Please, only those living in the village (and on the appropriate side of the river) need apply as this is the event’s only rule. Those participating are presented with medals and rewarded with the cheers of the excited onlookers. They also receive a certificate, just like participants in the original clash of 1957. The present holders of the trophy are the SOUTH SIDE
