The thing about traffic problems is that you wait ages for one to come along and then loads turn up at once. The M4 last Friday was beset with multiple hold-ups. Rory couldn’t get to Sammi, Sammi couldn’t get to Rory, Roy & Sammi couldn’t get…well, anywhere. Our van was set to avoid all this by heading up the A465 but, as it turns out, so was everybody that was trying to avoid the M4. Our satnav’s arrival time went up and down like a hurdler’s kneecap and we saw a lorry pull over and hit a car. Of us all, Andy - flying in from the states - had the most straightforward journey. We were 30 minutes late at the venue…which we took as a win.
When we arrived at The Halls in Wolverhampton there was security everywhere, big trucks parked outside, and several tour busses. Alas these were not for us: apparently James Morrison was playing in the bigger of the two halls. It was our first time at this venue and the staff & crew were fantastic. After sound check we of the lighting & sound crew found the Lupo Lounge nearby - Lounges are a great chain to look up where ever you are in the UK. The show was only about 60% full but I guess loads of people had gone to see Jim next door. Nevertheless the gig was great. Notably, in an intentionally cryptic TUCRS first, we had one audience member in who was - erm, posthumous. We headed to our hotel after the gig to find that the bar was still open - back of the net!
We headed for Exmouth on Saturday: a couple hours drive away. The Pavilion is right on the sea front, the sun was shining and it was a gloriously warm day. Perfect weather for shoving a couple of metric tonnes of gear up the ramp and onto the stage. The guys there are great and Alun’s from Wales so for once we didn’t have to slow our speech down to be understood. We had Gavin on lights, since Llwyd’s gone on a holiday: he did a sterling job. We had fish & chips from Harbour View on the sea front and then a great gig with a lively bunch of people.
Oh, and good luck to our dear friend and colleague Dan Saunders in his new role!
