Actually Recent Work – The Writers' Block

Back when Venn began—15 years ago—we dreamed of being an agency for the creative arts and charities. One of our first not-for-profit collaborators was The Writers' Block, a brilliant organisation dedicated to nurturing a love of the written word.

So it was a real pleasure to return to their brand and digital presence. Ceri led the charge, building on years of shared work to create a refreshed identity that feels joyful, imaginative, and full of narrative possibility.
Alongside it, we launched a new content-managed website — a digital home to accompany their beautiful new physical one at The Ladder.

Ongoing work: Surfers Against Sewage. Often, we do stuff that is behind the scenes, working with charities and organisations to help them define their purpose or build a brand strategy. Over the past few years, we have been working closely with SAS on as much that you can't directly see as there is that you can. We helped them refine their already excellent brand identity, improving its usability and accessibility, which culminated in a new set of brand guidelines and 2022's Ocean Impact Plan. With our good friends at , we redefined their brand values and built a brand strategy that guided the charity through a period of unprecedented growth and great successes.

We've been waiting for it to be "over" to show it, but of course, work like this is never really over. Since then, they've continued to evolve, and we've continued to help them sound the alarm on vital issues. We can't take credit for the amazing things they do, but it's a great thing to be a part of, even if it's not obvious to the world.

Recent Work: Dementia Carers Count. A project close to the hearts of many members of the team, we were approached to resolve some tricky website problems with a new site. As designers, we love a rebrand, but it’s not always the right thing to do - it looks good in our portfolio, but it’s a journey that must be made for the right reasons. In this case, a refreshed identity was decided on as the best approach, particularly for a charity where trust and continuity are so important.

Recent Work: Daur.co.uk. Daur is the Celtic word for “Dare”, or “daring to be courageous. The new project from the frankly ridiculously talented Mydd Pharo will create pioneering works of art through experimentation, play, and daring to take risks.

We’ve been lucky enough to have worked with Mydd for nearly a decade now (Is it that long? Time flies!), so when we were asked to work with him on his new project, we jumped at the chance. It’s a placeholder identity and website while the project launches, showing the possibilities that can emerge from getting joyful, talented, risk-takers together to create art. Stay tuned for more.

It’s our second year of taking part in the for a bit of fun in the midst of the busyness.

Jess, one of our graphic designers here at Venn, came up with this wonderful stethoscope design in honour of Doctors Ddesignateday - which falls on our designated date of March 30th.

I don’t know about you, but we’re all very excited that the opening of Cornwall’s first food hall, , is drawing near. So excited we thought we’d share some identity work we did last year for them and . It’s been a mammoth renovation project, but the end is in sight, or, should we say, the beginning of what will be a great new venue in Redruth. They’ve been announcing kitchens and happenings, and as the greedy-guts that we are, we’ve been eating it all up.

FROM THE ARCHIVE 💌

Back in 2014 we helped create a social network for people to share their most-loved films, art, books, music and other slices of creativity. In celebration of this love-in to creativity, culture clash event was hosted at Beerwolf Books, where illustrators reworked songs into art, and DJs live remixed tracks by other musicians.

Brainchild of , it was an ode to Cornwall's thriving creative scene, which of course we still love after all these years.

Is it Christmas again already? After an eventful year, we will be logging off as of the 21st of December (tomorrow!) to take a much-needed break with our families and loved ones. But do not fret, we'll be back in the new year on the 4th of January ready and raring to go.

We hope you all get the chance to have some proper R+R and look forward to catching up in the new year.
