On the build up to the Blue Light Festival we have another case study from Glen Fraser, Airport Firefighter, (FALCK Fire Service UK), Aberdeen International Airport π
Roles & Responsibilitiesπ§―
As a Firefighter at the airport, my key role is to contribute to the development of a safer airport by using my skills and knowledge to reduce the risk to passengers, the community and environment. We provide a 24/7 Fire cover for the airport making sure everyone and everything passing through or working at the airport are safe.
There's a wide range of incidents we attend ranging from aircraft emergencies, incidents on the airfield involving (vehicles, buildings, hazardous materials etc) and emergency First Aid.
We are trained to a high standard through requirements by the CAA and for us to maintain our competencies as a aviation Firefighter we have certain training to fulfil each month which can range from theory lessons, driving exercises around the airfield, using our 737 aeroplane / S92 helicopter training simulator to set fires then practice our specific roles for that scenario and practice different scenarios which we could be faced with from a medical emergency.
Best thing about your Job?π₯
The best thing about my job is knowing that everyday is always going to be different and never the same. I love getting to integrate across the airport at different sites getting to know how the other operations work such as the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance, Scottish Ambulance plane (Gamma), Search & Rescue helicopter, and other airlines/offshore helicopters based at the airport. We have a built in gym at the fire station which I find really great as this allows us to stay physically fit for the job.
How can people find out more about your role?π¨π»βπ
You can find out more about my role by visiting FALCK Fire Service UK LTD website. In there you will see a brief back ground about aviation firefighting and any vacancies.
