The Argyle Session

The Argyle Session A monthly session (3rd Tues) for Bluegrass, Old Time, Country and related music. Come along to enjoy playing or just listening. (And the beer's good too!)

21/02/2022

Just confirmation that the Bluegrass sessions in The Argyle no longer take place. Apologies, just not enough support to make it viable and of course lockdown made any further attempts impossible .

There are a few bluegrass or Americana sessions elsewhere in Edinburgh if you search around. Betty’s at No 1 High Street (1st Thurs of month) and weekly at Captains Bar on Thursday afternoons are two that come to mind.

Just to wish you all a Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2020!

No Argyle Bluegrass sessions planned for next year, but don’t forget Betty’s Session on the first Thursday of the month at No 1 the High Street.

Keep picking!

Just a reminder that the session is suspended for the foreseeable future. Sorry!

Hi all,

A bit of bad news, I’m afraid. I had a chat with Fiona the other day about the future of The Session. I’ve observed a steady decline in attendance over the past few months (except for the Fringe session). Fiona too has noticed this in the bar takings, and has stopped manning the downstairs bar as she can’t justify it. This, of course, has meant no audience comes down so it has been a bit of a vicious circle, which I’m afraid has been unbroken (just couldn’t resist that!). On top of this there has been less footfall in the Cellar Bar in general, students now seem to be preferring the “authentic local" atmosphere upstairs, which is impacting the other midweek music cellar events too.

So the net result is we are suspending the monthly sessions. We may see if we can have occasional sessions if there is something to warrant it - could be visiting musicians, or could be we just get a wee group of people who are committed to attend, or whatever. But for the moment, no more regular 3rd Tuesday sessions. If is isn’t working for us and isn’t working for The Argyle, there is no point in keeping dragging it out.

The venue is available, of course, if anyone wants to use it, subject lto to availability, for rehearsals and events, contact Fiona if you are interested.

Fire in the Grate, who emerged from what is now the smouldering ashes of “The Session”, will be having occasional concerts in The Argyle, which we will publicise well in advance. The next one is scheduled for Friday 22nd November, get it in the diary now! It would be good to try to keep music alive there, but it feels a bit of a struggle, especially outside the weekends.

I'll keep this page and post occasional items of interest, and of course any sessions that we plan.

Chaps and chapesses,
In spite of pressure during the Festival to turn the Cellar Bar over to a Uzbekistan improvised mime troupe, Fiona has preserved the monthly slot for our usual potpourri of American bluegrass, roots and country music. So dust off your banjos, polish up your dobro and head on down, Tuesday 20th, 8:30.

The last session was a bit light on performers, we need to keep up appearances, especially during Festival time if we want to retain the slot. So hope to see you there!

You'll recognise the usual suspects in the poster! FITG has two two hour gigs in the Argyle in the Fringe, plus a few guest appearances elsewhere. Hope to see you at one of them.

It’s Bluegrass time again! Next Tuesday 16th July is the monthly session, we’ll start at around 8:30 as usual in the Argyle Cellar Bar. I’m still a bit time constrained looking after my wife post her operation but I expect to drop in for an hour or so. See y'awl there!
