This week’s Instrument of the Week is the kora. This instrument is played by traditional storytellers, known as griots, of the Gambian River valley. These storytellers recite stories and histories while accompanied by this type of harp.

This week’s Instrument of the Week is the keyed trumpet by Louis Müller. The natural trumpet was notoriously difficult to play, particularly in regard to playing the notes in the upper register. In order to facilitate easier playing, keys were added to the trumpet in 1796 by Anton Weidinger!

Pochettes (also known as kits) were used by dancing masters to play the tunes as they taught dance steps to ladies and gentlemen. The sound of the pochette is quite piercing, making it possible to hear a single instrument over the stamping of feet on wooden floors.

They also just happen to be very VERY cute 😍

This week’s Instrument of the Week is the Tricone Resonator Guitar by National. The tricone was invented by John Dopyera in 1927, just one year before this guitar was made. It was commissioned by steel guitar player George Beauchamp to create a louder guitar that would be heard above the brass and reed section of a dance orchestra.

POV: It's August 28th 1952, and you just picked up a copy of the Scotsman to read all about the plans to turn St Cecilia's Hall back into a functional concert hall!

Miss Cairns, who owned the hall when it was the Excelsior Ballroom, realised her plans to convert St Cecilia's Hall back to its original purpose as a concert hall in April 1959. She sold the hall to the University of Edinburgh later that year, and the rest is history!
