MONTANE SPINE RACE / Captain Announcement 📢
We’re excited to announce two new Spine Race Captains are joining the ranks! Sharon Dyson and Steve Blythe will both be stepping into new roles this year.
Introducing our new Winter Spine Checkpoint Lead, Sharon Dyson.
Sharon first became involved in the Spine back in 2019 and has been a mainstay of the Spine team ever since.
“A fell-running pal of mine posted a comment on his social media about Jasmin Paris who was just about to win the overall winter event. That weekend, I dragged my husband up to Kirk Yetholm with the promise of a pub lunch just so I could watch a few runners getting to the wall of the Border Hotel. I was totally inspired and knew I wanted to get involved as a volunteer to support the race. I managed to catch Kevin McCann for a brief chat about how I could apply to volunteer, and the rest is history. With the exception of Covid time, I've volunteered every Summer and Winter ever since, and have made some very good friends in doing so. The Spine Race gets under your skin. Being a small part of helping competitors achieve their dreams gives a non-runner like me the biggest buzz. Now it's time to step into some big shoes! Thankfully Nicki Lygo is one of those very good friends I have made through meeting on the race, and I know she'll be there to support me as I take over her old role.”
We are so delighted to have Sharon on board.
We are thrilled that Steve Blythe will be stepping into the Spine Safety Team Deputy Lead role.
Steve has been part of almost every Spine event since 2020, including even staying on as a volunteer after DNFs when he’s been running.
“I’ve been a Spine Safety Team Coordinator in both summer and winter, so I know first hand how great our volunteers are, and how much work and dedication goes into Britain’s most brutal. I got into ultra-running after leaving the Royal Air Force, where I had been an RAF Mountain Rescue Team member. The highlight of my service was spending four winter months in Grytviken in South Georgia, where we were able to explore the island in some of the most extreme conditions. Since leaving the RAF, my second career has been in Emergency Management and Planning which includes supporting and managing control rooms in civil emergencies and major entertainment events. By combining my running and adventure experience with my day job, I hope to fill the massive boots left by my predecessor and keep the Spine at the forefront of endurance racing.”
We are so excited about the experience Steve brings to the team.
