It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our beloved market, which has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly 40 years. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all our customers, carbooters and market traders, both old and new. Together, we built something truly special that ran every bank holiday, rain or shine. Your support helped shape the market into the iconic space it became.
Unfortunately, recent events have made it impossible for us to continue. The challenges brought by Covid, along with securing our venue, have created insurmountable obstacles which we never managed to overcome.
Losing our founder, Bill Bains, was the ultimate heartbreak for us all.
Bill Bains was a true entrepreneur.
He faced many challenges when setting up his first market and was often turned away, sadly reflecting the biases of the time. He never let those setbacks deter him. He possessed a rare ability to connect with people, a skill that seems increasingly hard to find today. His genuine charm and witty personality allowed him to win over even the most skeptical individuals. He would be, as you are today, devastated with this news.
We’ve felt your love and support through your comments during the last couple of years. We truly didn’t want to throw in the towel until we had exhausted every possibility. This decision has been incredibly difficult, and we are so sorry to bring you this news. We would have loved to have one last market. Or at least the chance to share this news with you at our final event.
