When things were black and white. 📸

Established in the Bogside in 1982, Camerawork gave people the tools to create their own black and white images at a time when Derry was appearing regularly in international journalism through coverage of the conflict.

Against that backdrop, Camerawork photographers began recording everyday life in the city, building up an incredible archive of several thousand negatives over more than a decade.

The Camerawork Retrospective at Pilot’s Row gave people a chance to look back at those images and formed part of Féile 2026’s biggest-ever programme of exhibitions.

Dr Nick Maynard returned to Féile 2026 to speak about what he has witnessed working on the frontline in Gaza’s hospitals.

Having travelled to Gaza since 2010, including several times since 2023, Nick described conditions far worse than he could ever have imagined – from deliberate starvation under the Israeli blockade to the senseless killing of civilians, including thousands of children.

His talk followed a screening of Life Support, which documents the reality inside Gaza’s hospitals through footage largely unseen by international audiences.

“Yesterday I dared to struggle. Today I dare to win.”

Civil rights legend Bernadette Devlin-McAliskey spoke at Féile 2026, reflecting on a lifetime of campaigning for equality, social justice and human rights.

From the Civil Rights movement to her time as an MP and the decades of activism that followed, Bernadette discussed the experiences that shaped her politics and her continuing commitment to challenging injustice and inequality.

Conor McFeely and Pascale Steven brought a new exhibition to Ráth Mór Business Park as part of Féile 2026, combining photography, video, sound, sculpture and found objects.

The exhibition explored the subjective experience of apparition and its relationship to mysticism, supernatural phenomena and apocalyptic imagination.

It formed part of Féile's biggest-ever exhibition programme, with photography, visual art and painting on display across community centres, parks, streets and public spaces.

Thanks to the Derry Journal for working with us on Reeling in the Féile, our outdoor exhibition celebrating 34 years of Derry’s biggest community festival. 📸

The Journal archive has captured so much of life in Derry over the years, and is an important record of some of the biggest moments in the city’s history as well as the people and communities at the heart of it.

It was brilliant to dip into that archive and bring some of those photographs back onto the streets at Meenan Square, with plenty of familiar faces and Féile memories from across the years.

To celebrate 34 years of Féile the 'Journal' teamed up with the organisers to facilitate a retrospective outdoor photographic exhibition of the much-loved grassroots festival. ‘Reeling in the Féile’, a full-scale outdoor presentation of old pictures from the ‘Journal’ and Féile archives, was put on display at Meenan Square during the 2026 edition.
A trawl of the ‘Journal’ archives unearthed dozens and dozens of photographs from Féiles past.
Some of these made it onto the Bogside art installation. Here are some of them, as well as others from yesteryear. You can still check out the physical exhibition at Meenan Square.
