Bennigans "Live"

Bennigans "Live" Live music, appealing to all tastes, in the comfort of a traditionally run Irish Bar March 2014 - were still going strong. Then we stop for a while.

"Bennigans Live" will open for an introductory season only - Friday nights in Winter 2011. On other nights, the bar will continue to run its well established local programme of events (see FB "Bennigans Bar"). In "Bennigans Live" on Friday nights we will welcome some of the finest musical talent from all over ireland, playing up close and live. Our policy is to welcome proper songwriters and live

players, playing proper songs. Artists will be respected - a new PA is being installed and we are determined that when singers or players start, that they will have the respect of a musically savvy crowd who appreciate the calibre of the artists we are bringing to Derry. Many have asked, so, just to be open about how it works ...

Bennigans 'Live' is booked, managed and consulted by a small group of music friendly people who love the wee bar. Joe has the final word on all bookings. Bennigans 'Live' usually happens on Friday nights for short seasons of 4 or 5 gigs. We believe in live music and supporting original writers. We reckon good music is usually found in the hands of good people. Our primary commitment is to showcase the best of the new music emerging from our local area. Organizers take nothing from the gigs - every penny made from the door goes to the lead artist on the night. PM the page if you'd like to be considered for gigs, mind you, usually we are well booked in advance in terms of local talent. Thanks for supporting Bennigans 'Live' .

Dear Lawrd what a night. Maybe the best ever? Thanks for being the best crowd in the land - so friendly and community spirited. Paddy and the band played their hearts out of course. As always. just brilliant. Sincere thanks to every musician and punter who ever crossed the door. And most importantly last night, Joe was just stood there proud as punch of the whole thing. Massive big smile on his face all night. And so ends this little musical journey we called Bennigans 'Live' ... We all wish John every success as his journey as the new gaffer begins. Bennigans Abu!!!

Newell.

Very sad to report that Newell McBride has died. Newell was Joe's best and oldest buddy. He was also our finest heckler at the gigs - manys the night, Newell would remain unconvinced about the bands 'round the corner' there with Dennis and Jimmy and the gang. He would holler out his disinterest - even the bands laughed. We all knew he was very proud of the bar, and the gigs, and Joe, and the fact that young people were coming to the place in numbers.

A gentleman - he will be truly missed.

Well here we go then ... the final chapter of Bennigans 'Live' ... thanks to every artist who ever played or supported, every punter who ever came along, and anyone who in any way helped, or offered any goodwill to help make the thing happen in the first place ... legends all. It was a blast.

Wee Joe.

What a legend. Generous to a fault, old school, funny, much loved ... and the single reason why the bar is the special place we all love so much. I'm sure many of you have heard the rumours. Lets put them to bed:

~ After a lifetime in the trade, Joe Nelis is to step down as Bennigans Manager in the next few weeks. He's the best gaffer in the city, and respected like no other. Joe feels its time to retire and take some time to himself. For the rest of us, thats the bad news ...

~ The good news is that the new Bennigans lease has been signed by local man John Leighton. John's Jazz Club is already a firm fixture in the bar on a Sunday night, and most importantly, John has Joe's support and blessing in this new move. Safe to say, Joe will still be found sipping a few pints in the wee bar. (As long as he behaves himself).

All change. So where does that leave the 'Bennigans Live' nights? 2015 wll look after itself in good time, but John and Joe have asked for one more season of 'Bennigans Live' Fridays up to Xmas. No full schedule yet, but Bennigans Live as we know it will end on Friday 19th December with the traditional Christmas Party and sinaglong hosted by Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas. Wouldn't be Xmas without Paddy. Fantastic.

Full line up to follow here but even at this stage, its safe to say this run is going to be a little bit special. Pencil in yer Fridays at Bennigans ....

Can hardly begin to describe how good that gig was on Friday night. If ever the right man was in the right place it was Paul Casey on a night when so many people were feeling so sad about Gerry Andersons death. Gerry was one of Pauls champions, and everything about this gig was just perfect: the intimacy of the crowd, the band, the sound quality ... thanks to all for making it such a good one.....

Next up, our final gig in this current run of 'Bennigans Live' showcases. Most people I know in bands here will tell you Paddy Nash is the best songwriter we have. Paddy says that about Eamon Friel. And so, a rare chance to see both men up close and personal this Friday as Eamon releases his new material.

Friday was special eh ... What a treat to see Glenn at full pelt. The band was brilliant, as of course were the mighty Little Hooks supporting. Cheers also to Susie Blue. We've rarely had an atmosphere as intimate as that - the place was rammed, but Glenn held the crowd in the palm of his hand. Standing ovations too. All of us in Bennigans hope this is his year, and we wish him all the very best with the new material.

Next up - Paul Casey. Paul has never had his full band in the wee bar - and what a band.... basically Liam Bradley and Nicky Scott offer a bona fide Van Morrison backline - world class musicians. Couple that with Pauls faithful local fans, and we have the makings of another ripper showcase in store this Friday night..... see you at Bennigans 'Live' ...

She did it again. Jeanette and the band played another belter set on Friday -powerful and passionate. Ego was the perfect support, and all in all the friendliest night of music you'd care to attend. Thanks to all: Jeanette, Ruari, Jamie for stepping in on bass, and Marty for doing the PA.

Next up, one of the most talented people working in music here. Glenn Rosborough has seen many incarnations as a singer, writer, tutor and producer. On Friday night we eagerly anticipate his take on his own musical story. This will be a night where Glenn's musical compadres - past and present - will document his diverse and discerning musical story to date. A rare showcase.
