The Glenfarg Folk Club is delighted to welcome back folk singer, songwriter, raconteur, Anthony John Clarke who has been an integral part of the UK music scene for 30 years. He is much loved by those who know him and hugely respected by his peers. Originally from Belfast, AJ emerged there with his songs ‘The Broken Years’ and ‘The Only Life Gloria Knows’ but now presents as one of the most humorous and entertaining acts around. Audiences cannot resist the musical invitations to sing from this true gentleman of the music world. His gentle stage presence is matched by a voice rich in melody and accompanied by some deft guitarwork. Of course, it would be remiss in any introduction to AJ not to mention the fabulous Julia Porter, his occasional or possibly frequent stage partner. Her presence on keyboards offers an added musical dimension, while the rapport between them brings an extra delight to proceedings.

DAN WALSH...
Describing what Dan Walsh does is no easy task, but at the heart of it is British, Irish and American folk music delivered with a healthy dose of funky grooves – all performed with his unique and dazzling take on clawhammer style banjo helping to challenge all preconceptions about the instrument. Add to all that, poignant songs, astonishing musical departures and lively humour and the result is a truly memorable live show which has wowed audiences across the world from intimate seated rooms to huge dancing crowds in festival fields. As well as his thriving solo career, he’s an in-demand session musician, recently recording with Ward Thomas and Darius Rucker and playing live with Imelda May and Seasick Steve. He’s also a key part of the acclaimed Urban Folk Quartet (“impossibly wonderful,” fRoots). He has toured the world, from Canada and the USA to Australia, New Zealand and across Europe, everywhere winning new fans for his rare mix of virtuosic musicianship, moving and amusing songwriting, and winning charm. Whatever you do, don’t be washing your hair on Monday night, this a gig not to be missed.

Coming up on Monday 31st August,

Wendy’s wide musical interests have led her to sing and play at folk and jazz events worldwide. She has composed music for theatre and film and has vast recording experience as a guest on albums ranging from ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Burns’, and ‘The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill’ to The Pearlfishers’s ‘Sky Meadows’.

Her own CDs: ‘A Breath on the Cold Glass’, ‘Two Loves’ (Lochshore) and ‘A Shirt of Silk or Snow’ (Fellside) show her love of song as well as instrumental work; she was nominated in the Scots Trad Awards 2010 as ‘Traditional Singer of the Year’. Her commissions for Celtic Connections – ‘Daybreak on the World’s Edge’, poems of William Soutar set for cello quartet and three male voices, and a large-scale work based on Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s ‘Sunset Song’ – feature some of the best traditional musicians in Scotland.

Accompanied by three of Scotland’s top folk musicians, Sandy Brechin, Fiona Cuthill and Stevie Lawrence it promises to be a superb evening of entertainment.

On Monday 24th August we have a ‘No Theme’ Singaround. Come along and give us a song of your choice. These nights are always popular because you never know what is coming next. It might be an old favourite, a song you haven’t heard in years, a parody, a new song, a funny song, a song that brings back memories, or a different version of a song you already know. Joinyinners and listeners are equally welcome.
