Coventry has, for

many years boasted a vibrant live music and jazz scene with a wealth of local musical talent and enthusiastic fans. Jazz-a-matazz was formed in 2008 (formerly Westwood Jazz), following the sad demise of the well-loved and popular Sunday afternoon sessions, at The Cocked Hat in Binley. Jazz-a-matazz took over from the late, great, Brian Bates and hosted live jazz sessions for 12 years at The Westwood Reading Rooms. After the pandemic, we hosted at Eastern Green Social Club for a short time. Now, our home is at The Ansty Club. Between 2021 – 2025, we worked in close collaboration with Solihull Jazz, but we have both taken the recent decisions to become independent of each other, once again. Everyone is made very welcome to enjoy music of many genres, don’t be fooled by the “Jazz” banner. Whether you are new to live music or a seasoned ‘jazzer’; our live music sessions offer a great value for money. An afternoon of music, entertainment and friendship for just £10. The different music styles we host range from Rock and Roll, Pop, Blues, Country, Traditional Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Hot Club, Swing, Big Band and Be-bop, no genre is unheard of here, just great music played well, in fabulous company!

I’ve just received the sad news that Barry Kesterton passed away in the early hours of this morning.

Barry was a gentleman, fun loving, a keen jazzer and an all round great man! He was often seen at jazz festivals with his camera over his shoulder.

I am sorry my only photo of Barry isn’t the best quality, I’d never pass his photography standards, but it was the only one I have!

Funeral details are to follow.

If anyone has any stories about Barry please let either Val Larn (Chambers) aka Aunty Val or myself know.

RIEP Barry. You’ll be so missed by everyone.

This will be a tremendous gig….. soooooo excited

🎼🎹 Sarah Spencer’s Sax ‘n’ Bone🥁🪕🎷

On a gig with the Harlem Jazz Orchestra, Zoltan and Sarah were talking and Zoltan said that he wanted to play a New Orleans Revival-style gig with himself and Sarah. Inspired, Sarah has formed a band of some of the best musicians in the UK who play in that idiom. She decided to highlight the 2-reed front line and go without a trumpet player but, instead, have Mike Owen join them, which makes the band about as authentic in the New Orleans dance hall style as possible.

Sarah Spencer - reeds, Zoltan Sagi - reeds, Mike Owen - trombone, Tom ‘Spats’ Langham - banjo/guitar, Jim Swinnerton - string bass, Graham Smith – drums

For an afternoon of terrific live music entertainment and fun, head to The Ansty Club, Coventry where you'll be very warmly welcomed.
