The programme is a concert of music and words, revealing the paradoxical qualities of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). It explores Liszt's career as the first piano virtuoso, the conflicts in his personal life and the mesmerising effect he had in the salons and concert halls of Europe. Female audience members threw their gloves at him and even tried to smoke his discarded cigar stubs! The evening promises to be a tour de force of music and words, revealing the paradoxical qualities of Franz Liszt: a generous, romantic and deeply spiritual genius. Cyngerdd o fiwsig a geiriau yn arddangos nodweddion paradocsaidd Franz Liszt (1811-1886).Archwilir gyrfa Liszt fel y celfyddydwr piano cyntaf, gwrthdrawiadau ei fywyd personol a’r effeithiau hynod gafodd yn neuaddau cyngerdd Ewrob. Fe daflai merched eu menig ato o’r gynulleidfa; ceisiau eraill fonion sigâr y bu’n ysmygu! Noson gofiadwy o gerddoriaeth a geiriau fydd yn arddangos ei athrylith hael, rhamantus ac ysbrydol.

7.30pm - THE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA SARAH BRANDWOOD-SPENCER – Leader, BENJAMIN POWELL – Piano. DAVID TOLLINGTON – Horn. This year the Orchestra will once again bring us an exciting programme of sparkling festival works. The evening will open with a performance of Gerald Finzi's beautiful and serene Eclogue for Piano and String Orchestra, Opus 10, with Ben Powell as soloist. Originally intended to be part of a grand piano concerto, the outer movements never materialised and so Finzi reworked the piece to be played on its own. Mozart's ever popular Horn Concerto No. 3 in Eb major, K.447, with its galloping and virtuosic third movement, will follow, featuring soloist David Tollington. The evening will culminate in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Opus 93. Beethoven fondly referred to this as 'my little Symphony in F', to distinguish it from his Sixth Symphony, a longer work also in F. Although conceived on a smaller scale, Beethoven's hallmarks, including advanced planning of motivic and thematic writing, defiant counterpoint, furious cross-rhythms, sudden dynamic shifts and idyllic hymn-like episodes are all on display. Daw ein cerddorfa eleni â rhaglen o weithiau cyffrous a disglair inni. Agorir gyda pherfformiad o Eclogue i Biano a Cherddorfa Linynnol, Opus 10, Gerald Finzi, sy’n waith hardd a thangnefeddus gyda Ben Powell yn unawdydd. Ail-weithiwyd y darn gwreiddiol a fwriadwyd i fod yn rhan o Concerto Piano gan Finzi. Concerto poblogaidd Mozart i’r Corn, Rhif 3 yn Eb mwyaf, K.447, gyda David Tollington yn unawdydd, fydd yn dilyn. Daw’r noson i ben gyda pherfformiad o Symffoni Rhif 8 yn F, Opus 93, Beethoven. Byddai Beethoven yn cyfeirio at y Gwaith fel “fy symffoni fechan yn F” i’w gwahaniaethu o’i Chweched Symffoni, gwaith hwy, eto yn F. Gwelir nodweddion y cyfansoddwr, y cynllunio thematic, gwrthbwynt herfeiddiol, rhythmau cymhleth, newidiadau sydyn a chyfnodau pan glywir seiniau emynyddol darluniadol; maent oll yn cael eu harddangos yn y gwaith.
TUESDAY, JULY 21 / DYDD MAWRTH, GORFFENNAF 21
1 pm – THE FITZSIMMON ENSEMBLE SARAH BRANDWOOD-SPENCER – Violin, CATH YATES – Violin, RAYMOND LESTER– Viola, ALEXANDER HOLLADAY - Cello, BENJAMIN POWELL - Piano.
In the first of their two concerts at the festival this year, the Ensemble will premier a composition by Conwy composer, Hazel Sturt, commissioned as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations for Telford's bridge, as well as bringing us two stunning works of the chamber music repertoire, one well-known, and the other deserving to be better known. Mozart's String Quartet No. 19 in C major, K.465, nicknamed the 'Dissonance' Quartet from the unusual harmonies in its slow introduction, will open the programme. One of Mozart's most analysed compositions, its unusual harmonies are often seen as a precursor to Wagner and his enigmatic Tristan Chord. Then will follow Josef Suk's Piano Quintet in G minor, Opus 8, written early in his career in 1893. The Quintet shows the influence of Brahms, to whom it is dedicated, but the work is far more than a youthful homage to Brahms and other composers, such as Suk's fellow Czech, Dvorak; many of the aspects of the melodic style are typical of Suk throughout his career.
Yn eu cyngerdd cyntaf yn yr ŵyl eleni, bydd yr Ensemble yn perfformio gwaith newydd gan
Hazel Sturt, cyfansoddwr lleol, gomisynwyd fel rhan o ddathliad pen-blwydd 200 mlynedd
Pont Telford. Dont hefyd â dau waith syfrdanol o gerddoriaeth siambr, un adnabyddus ac un
a ddylai fod yn fwy adnabyddus. Agorir y rhaglen gyda Phedwarawd llinynnol Mozart, Rhif
19 yn C fwyaf, K.465, sydd â’r llysenw y Pedwarawd Anghytgord o achos yr harmoni
anghyffredin glywir yn y cyflwyniad araf. Ystyrir y gwaith yn ragflaenydd i Wagner â’i Gord
Tristan. Yna, Pumawd Piano Josef Suk yn G leiaf, Opus 8, ysgrifenwyd yn fuan yn ei yrfa, ym
1893. Gwelir yma ddylanwad Brahms ac iddo ef y cysegrwyd y gwaith, sy’n fwy na
chyflwyniad llencyn i Brahms a chyfansoddwyr eraill, megis ei gydwladwr Tsiecaidd, Dvorak.
Mae nifer o agweddau’r dull melodig yn nodweddiadol o Suk trwy gydol ei yrfa.

The Post Industrial Revolution period will be covered by Francis Poulenc's Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano, FP43, and the premiere of a piece commissioned jointly by Ensemble Cymru and the Festival from local composer, Mared Emlyn, will celebrate Telford's genius in a contemporary but approachable idiom.

FRIDAY, JULY 24 / DYDD GWENER, GORFFENNAF 24
1pm – THE FITZSIMMON ENSEMBLE SARAH BRANDWOOD-SPENCER – Violin, CATH YATES – Violin, RAYMOND LESTER– Viola, DAMION BROWNE - Cello, BENJAMIN POWELL - Piano.
In this concert the Ensemble bring us two cornerstones of the chamber repertoire, beginning with Haydn's majestic 'Sunrise Quartet' No.63 in Bb major, Opus 76, No. 4. It gained its nickname from the rising theme over sustained chords that begins the quartet, which throughout shows Haydn's genius for this instrumental combination. This will be followed by Mendelssohn's Piano Quartet No. 3 in B minor, Opus 3, which he completed just before his sixteenth birthday. Though composed at such an early age, the work is vintage Mendelssohn, brilliantly virtuosic, containing clever counterpoint, and strong melodic interest throughout. As always, and especially in the year in which we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Telford's bridge, it is a pleasure to include works by Mendelssohn in the programme, given that he visited Conwy in 1829 and sketched the Castle and newly completed suspension bridge.
Yn y cyngerdd daw’r Ensemble â dwy gornelfaen cerddoriaeth siambr inni eu mwynhau,
Pedwarawd mawr Haydn ‘Sunrise Quartet’ Rhif 63 yn Bb mwyaf, Opus 76, Rhif 4, sy'n agor y perfformiad. Cafodd ei lysenw o'r thema sy'n codi dros gordiau cyson yr agoriad, ac mae'r pedwarawd cyfan yn arddangos athrylith y cyfansoddwr wrth gyfuno synau offerynnol. Dilynir hyn gan Bedwarawd Piano Mendelsshon,Rhif 3 yn B leiaf, Opus 3, a gwblhaodd ychydig cyn ei ben-blwydd yn un ar bymtheg. Er mor ifanc ei oed, mae’r gwaith yn hynod aeddfed, yn llawn o wrthbwynt clyfar gyda melodiau diddorol drwyddo. Fel arfer, ac yn enwedig wrth ddathlu 200 mlynedd pont Telford, y mae’n bleser cynnwys gweithiau gan Mendelsshon yn y rhaglen o ystyried iddo ymweld â Chonwy ym 1829 gan dynnu llun o’r Castell a’r bont grog newydd sbon.
3pm - THE FESTIVAL LECTURE (at The Royal Cambrian Academy, Crown Lane)
RHIAN DAVIES – Speaker and MAXIMILIAN EHRHARDT - Harp - ‘Living by Sounds’: Harpers and Tourists in Wales.
In 18th and 19th century Wales, the sound of the triple harp was inseparable from the experience of travel. For visitors following the tourist trail, the national instrument provided a constant and evocative soundtrack. Beyond the romantic image lies a rich social history: professional itinerant harpers who earned their living by performing for visitors, members of the gentry and local communities. Glimpses of this world survive in travellers' journals, sketches and letters , as well as in the harp repertoire itself. In this engaging hour of music and storytelling, Maximilian Ehrhardt and Rhian Davies invite the audience to step back in time. Through live performance and vivid historical accounts, they explore the lives of Wales's harpers, from the celebrated harpers of Conwy, led by the blind John Smith, to the Llangollen harper whose playing famously left Felix Mendelssohn nursing a toothache.
Yn y ddeunawfed ganrif a’r pedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, roedd sain y delyn deires yn
anwahanadwy o brofiadau teithio yng Nghymru. I ymwelwyr yn dilyn llwybrau twristiaid,
roedd ein offeryn cenedlaethol yn cynnig sain oedd yn denu ac i’w glywed yn barhaol
ymhobman. Mae’r hanes cymdeithasol tu ôl i'r ddelwedd ramantaidd hon yn gyfoethog ac yn darlunio telynorion proffesiynol crwydrol a enillai eu bywoliaeth drwy berfformio i ymwelwyr, aelodau o deuluoedd bonedd a chymunedau lleol. Ceir golwg o’r hen arferion hyn mewn dyddiaduron, darluniau allythyrau’r cyfnod yn ogystal â’r alawon telyn eu hunain. Gwahoddir y gynulleidfa i gymryd cam yn ôl tra bod y ddau berfformiwr yn archwilio bywydau’r telynorion hyn, o’r rhai enwog yng Nghonwy, a arweiniwyd gan John Smith, y telynor dall, i delynor Llangollen adawodd Felix Mendelssohn yn diodde o’r ddanodd wedi ei berfformiad.
7pm – DAFYDD JONES – Tenor, BRIAN HUGHES - Piano. Dafydd Jones hails from the Vale of Clwyd and has forged a distinguished career in the World of Opera. A graduate of the Royal College of Music International Opera School, he is a member of the esteemed Bayerische Staatsoper Opernstudio in Munich, where he has performed many leading roles. For this concert Dafydd teams up with one of the musical legends of Wales, Brian Hughes, to present a programme of songs by Welsh composers, arrangements of Welsh folksongs mentioned in their journals by travellers to Conwy in the early 19th century, and lieder by Schubert, in recognition of his present links with Germany.
O Ddyffryn Clwyd y daw Dafydd Jones ac mae wedi sefydlu gyrfa o fri ym myd Opera. Yn
raddedig o Ysgol Opera Rhyngwladol y Coleg Cerdd Brenhinol, mae’n aelod o Bayerische
Staatsoper Opernstudio, Munich ble y mae wedi perfformio nifer o rannau arweiniol. Ar
gyfer y cyngerdd y mae Dafydd wedi ymuno ag un o ffigyrau cerddorol chwedlonol Cymru,
Brian Hughes i gyflwyno rhaglen o ganeuon gan gyfansoddwyr Cymreig, trefnianau o
ganeuon gwerin a nodwyd gan deithwyr i Gonwy yn eu cofnodion yn y Bedwaredd Ganrif ar
Bymtheg ac yna, lieder gan Schubert, i gydnabod ei gyswllt agos â’r Almaen ar hyn o bryd.
8.30pm – MAXIMILIAN EHRHARDT - Harp. Maximilian Ehrhardt is one of a new generation of performers of the historical harp, renowned for his blend of virtuosity, scholarly inquiry and innovative concert programming. He studied modern harp in Amsterdam and historical harps in Milan and is recognised as one of the Europe's leading exponents of the triple harp. Originating Italy, the triple harp is the kind of instrument that early 19th century visitors to Conwy would have heard in the inns of the town at the time Telford's bridge was built. Max will include in his programme variations on Welsh airs, such as those on 'Morfa Rhuddlan' by composer John Parry (Parri ddall) along with a range of works by Handel and other 18th and early 19th century composers. The concert will take place in candlelight in order to enhance the intimate nature of the instrument and the music to be performed.
Mae Maximilian Ehrhardt yn un o berfformwyr cenhedlaeth newydd o delynorion; mae’n
enwog am ei raglennu diddorol, ei allu a’i gywreinrwydd hanesyddol. Astudiodd y delyn
fodern yn Amsterdam a thelynau hanesyddol ym Milan ac mae’n cael ei gyfrif yn un o
ddehonglwyr arweiniol y delyn deires. Yn y 19eg ganrif byddai ymwelwyr â Chonwy wedi
clywed seiniau’r delyn deires yn nhafarndai’r dref - yn y cyfnod pan fyddai pont Telford yn
cael ei hadeiladu ger y Castell. Bydd Max yn cynnwys alawon Cymreig, fel Morfa Rhuddlan,
gan y cyfansoddwr John Parry (Parri ddall), gweithiau gan Handel a chyfansoddwyr eraill o’r
18fed a’r 19eg ganrif. Cynhelir y cyngerdd mewn golau canhwyllau i ychwanegu at yr
