A service to mark the 81st anniversary of Operation Market Garden was held at Colchester War memorial.

The selflessness, determination and endurance of the airborne soldiers who fought at Arnhem in September 1944 serves as an example for today's soldiers serving in the city's 16 Air Assault Brigade.

Alongside military and civic dignitaries, pupils from St John's Green Primary School laid sunflowers, mirroring the Dutch tradition of children placing flowers on graves during the main commemorative service at Oosterbeek War Cemetery.

Gunners and musicians joined forces in Colchester today to mark His Majesty The King’s Official Birthday.

The guns of G Parachute Battery (Mercer’s Troop), 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery fired a Royal Salute in Lower Castle Park to send birthday greetings to the King in the way that only artillery can.

The 21-gun salute was fired by a battery of four 105mm Light Guns. The troops, based at the city’s Merville Barracks, were then inspected by the Lord-Lieutenant of Essex Jennifer Tolhurst, as the King’s representative in the county.

Before and after the salute, a brass quintet from the Band and Bugles of The Rifles played at the bandstand to entertain the public.

Wow, what another fantastic day we had!

Thanks to 16 Air Assault Brigade, our very own 15 Squadron Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment, as well as all the Army Reserve units, charities and fantastic organisations who joined us in Colchester for .

Lieutenant Colonel Ed Rankin, Commander of Colchester Garrison, said: “What a brilliant day we all had! The military is drawn from the civilian community and the close relationship and support we have from the people of Colchester and Essex is one of the foundations of our troops’ ability to do their job. It was great to see so many people - particularly young people - come out to celebrate the links between us, enjoy some fantastic displays and learn more about the Army.”

Too many highlights for us to mention but tell us yours and post your photos in comments!
