"Like many families we're having a pre-Christmas sort out. Getting rid of accumulated junk, making room for the inevitable numerous new gifts, some wanted, others less so. I'm due another trip to the tip, sorry, recycling centre. There goes that £40 toaster that lasted about 18months. Bye-bye defunct laptop that's now totally worthless. Clothes now faded and no longer worn are going to the charity shop, along with bad novels and out of date reference books just taking up limited shelf space. Whilst we have been prepping for another Christmas, Chris and Marc have busy putting together a work of art. The various talented photographers have gifted their images at zero cost, Chris and Marc, have donated their time and design expertise for free. You may think £50 is bit pricey, particularly this year when everything is more expensive, however, inevitably the production costs have risen like everything else, if there's any profit from each book it'll be less than £5 and anyway it'll be put towards the good cause of encouraging young riders to participate in events. But crucially, you aren't spending £50 on 'just a book', yes you'll peruse it now, maybe you'll wish it was had a few more pages for the money, but generally you'll be impressed with the images and then it'll be put away on a shelf somewhere. It's not 'for' now. With it's slim profile, it won't take up much space on a shelf, so you're not going to recycle it like so many dead toasters or bad novels, what you'll do is leave it for a while, then in 5 years time, and maybe again in 10, then 30 and hopefully 50...someone's going to pick it up, maybe with a inquisitive 'what's this?' maybe a grown up version of a current child, maybe a new partner or new cycling buddy, and they are going to inquire, "Were you really there?", "What was it like?", "Was the weather really biblical?", "What was going on with the giant kebab?" And your going to smile to yourself, the cost now long forgotten, and let the images trigger another reliving of the sheer epicness of the event, and smiling you'll reply, yes I really was there and no...no one could ever explain the kebab. £50 for a thin book of photos? Meh. £50 for a time machine letting you relive the epic day for evermore, bargain. Buy one whilst you can. Or better still, stick it on your Christmas list and get someone else to buy one for you".
